Dinosaur embryos (Puhai, etc./natural communication; ; Vladimir Rimbala) 1992, a farmer in China discovered an unusual fossil: the embryo of a rare giant bird-shaped dinosaur that lived 90 million years ago. Researchers announced in a new study today (May 9) that the embryo nicknamed "Little Louis" represents a newly discovered giant oval dinosaur species. They named the newly discovered "North Longhua" with a combination of Chinese and Latin, which means "Dragon Baby from China". [Read the full story of Baby Louis or watch the video]

Mom and Dad (Zhao Chuang) Anopheles sinensis lived in the Cretaceous period about 90 million years ago. The adult of this species is very huge, with a length of 26 feet (8 meters) from the nose to the end of the tail. When they are 1 1 year old, they can weigh up to 6600 pounds (3000 kilograms) when they are fully grown.

Little dinosaur (Pu H. et al./Nature Communication; ; The embryo of Trionyx sinensis drawn by Vladimir Mbala is smaller than its parents. After hatching, it weighs less than 9 pounds (4 kilograms).

Xiaolong (Pu Hong et al./Nature News Agency; A photo and illustration of 15 inch long (38 cm) baby Louis. The scientific name of the dinosaur "North Longhua" is a respect for China culture. In Chinese, "Beibei" means "baby" and "dragon" means "dragon". The name of this species comes from Latin China. Therefore, the name of dinosaur means "Little Dragon from China".

The photo of Pu H. et al. /Nature Communications (above) shows the pattern on the outer surface of a giant eggshell, which is called a giant dragon egg. The cross section (bottom) shows two microstructure layers of the eggshell. The scale is 1 mm (0.04 inch). The eggs of giant tongue-sole usually lay eggs in claws as long as 10 feet (3 meters).

Fossil bones (Pu H. et al./Nature News Agency) These bones (left) are located in the right knee area of baby Louis. The scale is in centimeters. Other bones (right) show the right tibia and the end of fibula of baby Louis. The scale is 5 mm (0.2 inch).

Pu H.et al/Nature Communications This picture describes the comparison between the embryos of Trionyx sinensis and Siamese crocodile. Light green arrows indicate the direction of neck and hip respectively. The embryo of Trionyx sinensis looks more like a crocodile embryo of 5 1 day (right) than a 78-day embryo that is close to hatching (right). This comparison shows that the embryo of Trionyx sinensis died before three-quarters of the development in the egg was completed. [Read the whole article of Louis Baby or watch the video]
