Magpie nesting process
1. Magpie is one of the most popular birds. It likes to nest in the big tree next to the house and move around the residential area. The bird's nest is spherical, built by men and women, and woven with dead branches. The inner wall is filled with thick soil, lined with grass leaves, cotton wool, animal hair and feathers, all of which are picked up by magpies with their mouths. Magpies build nests in high and sparse places, such as trees, chimneys, high-voltage towers and so on. The nest is large and round, its structure is firm and complex, and it has the habit of being renovated every year. Generally monogamous, unless widowed. Breeding in spring and summer every year, 5-8 eggs per nest. Incubation period 18 days or so, young birds become late and leave the nest in about one month.
2. The main features of the construction process can be summarized as follows:
First, in the choice of the construction site of the bird's nest, it always tends to be above the dense treetops of big trees. In addition to ensuring a certain distance from the ground, it also takes into account stability. Generally, strong winds and heavy rains are not bad. In addition, some tall trees in villages, roadsides, fields and parks are ideal nesting sites for magpies, because their habits are biased towards people.
The second is the layered design of the nest. Magpies will build their nests layer by layer from the outside to the inside according to the three-layer construction method after choosing the nesting site. First of all, some thick dry branches will be connected as the base and "skeleton" of the whole bird's nest, which is more conducive to the fixation of the whole bird's nest. On the basis of the frame constructed by these big branches, magpies will continue to pick up many thin dry branches and fill the periphery of the frame, thus forming a "blank" of the bird's nest. After all this is done, magpies will find some soft materials, such as bird hair, animal hair, cotton wool and so on. And fill it in the nest to achieve the effect of comfort and heat preservation.
Third, it will use the adhesion of soil for reinforcement. After the magpie completes the frame design of the bird's nest, it carries out the construction of the "external wall" in synchronization with the internal decoration, that is, taking wet mud and small dry branches and pasting them on the outermost layer of the bird's nest, so that the interior of the bird's nest is basically not ventilated after the soil is dried, which can play an ideal insulation effect of wind, rain and snow prevention.
Fourth, the design of the top and opening of the bird's nest is more particular. Unlike most other nesting birds, magpies pursue "Excellence" in nesting. In addition to the features just mentioned, the upper part of the nest will be "covered". This kind of covering is not added at the end, but is carried out at the same time during the construction process. The final nest is ellipsoidal, with no opening at the top, and an opening for magpies to enter and leave at the side. The opening area is small and can only enter and leave at the same time. The direction of this opening is also more particular, that is, it will not face northwest or northeast, so as to minimize the influence of cold air from the north.
