What does a scale insect look like?

The common shapes of scale insects are round, oval, linear or oyster. Larvae have short feet, and can move for food when they are young. When they grow up, their feet degenerate and lead a fixed life. The common species are Hemiptera rubra, Hemiptera fusca, Hemiptera corning, Echinococcus and Hemiptera. Female adults have no wings, and the boundaries between head, chest and abdomen are not obvious. They look similar to nymphs in appearance, some are larger in size and some are obviously different in color.

Scale insects grow by constantly absorbing the juice of plant stems and leaves, so the growth state of branches and leaves harmed by scale insects will become worse, and they are more prone to yellowing and deformation, and some leaves will also have curly changes, so once the leaves are found to have some changes, it is necessary to check the branches and leaves to see if the scale insects are at work.

The investigation of scale insects can be divided into two aspects: general survey and detailed investigation according to the different purposes and contents of the investigation. Usually, the whole plant or a certain part of a plant is taken as the investigation unit, such as the branches, leaves and fruits of a certain part, and even the area or length of a certain leaf on the branches and leaves is taken as the investigation and statistics unit. If fruit trees are investigated, each tree should be investigated in five directions: southeast, northwest and central, so as to comprehensively reflect the damage of leaves, branches and fruits.

1. investigation of scale insects on leaf branches 10~20 sample trees are generally selected for investigation. When the tree shape is low and the population density is low, the whole plant can be investigated. When the tree height is not convenient for direct statistics, the crown can be divided into upper, middle and lower parts and in different directions, and branches with a length of 10~20cm or 50~ 100 leaves can be taken to count the population.

2. Investigation of scale insects on fruits When investigating scale insects on fruits, we can choose several orchards with different main varieties and damage degrees, adopt the five-point sampling method, select 3-5 plants at each point, investigate 50- 100 fruits according to the upper, middle and lower parts of each tree crown and different directions, or randomly check 3-5 baskets on the fruit pile after picking, and check 65433 fruits from them.

3. In the investigation of underground scale insects, several representative fields are usually selected, and 5 quadrats are dug every 6667m2, with an area of 1m2, and the depth depends on the habitat depth of scale insects.
