Ruan Yizhong (born in 1950) is a well-known Taiwanese photographer and documentary filmmaker. He was born in Toucheng Town, Yilan County. The main style of the works is humanistic documentary.
Ruan Yizhong worked as an editor for Young Lion Literature in his early days. After retiring from the army, he worked as a photographer and designer for the English version of Hansheng Magazine. In 1975, he served as a photographer for Family Monthly. It was also in this year that he began to devote himself to promoting Taiwanese photography. development. He has written quite a few photography-related articles and books, and has made outstanding contributions to photography education in Chinese regions around the world. He is known as "the enlightener and evangelist of world photography in China" (Beijing "China Photography Magazine" Issue 6, 2005). In 1981, Ruan Yi-chung transitioned from photography to television program production. He is widely known for his documentaries, such as "Journey of Reflections", which describe the creation of Taiwanese artists, the development of local art, the life of aborigines and the evolution of urban and rural development. He and his wife Yuan Yaoyao founded Photographers Publishing House in 1990 and Photographers Magazine in 1992 with Chinese and English bilingual editions. They introduced the works of outstanding photographers from all over the world and were widely praised. In 1991, he was invited to join the European Association for the History of Photography, becoming the first Asian member of the association. In 1995, Ruan Nghi Trung was selected into the "Global Contemporary Photographers Yearbook". In 2007, he won the Humanities Award from the Taiwan TECO Foundation for Science, Technology, Culture and Education. He has held solo exhibitions in France, the United States, Mexico, Lithuania, Sweden, China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan. His works are collected by famous institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, France. He has taught in the Fine Arts Department of Taipei University of the Arts since 1988. He is currently an adjunct professor at Taipei University of the Arts and a visiting professor at Shenyang Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts. Currently, he and his wife are volunteers at Taiwan Tzu Chi Merit Association.
Ruan Yi Zhong currently teaches at the National Academy of Arts as an associate professor in the Department of Fine Arts and the Institute of Fine Arts Creation.
