The meaning of double happiness

The origin of "囍"

The big red word "happiness" hung on the doors and windows of the bridal chamber not only enhances the atmosphere, but also symbolizes double happiness. According to historical records, the origin of "囍" is related to Wang Anshi in the Song Dynasty.

It is said that when Wang Anshi was twenty years old, he went from Linchuan, Fuzhou to Luoyang, Kyoto to take the exam. He stopped in a hotel in Majia Town to wait for the exam, and went to school after dinner one day. On the street, I happened to see a pair of horse lanterns hanging high on the door of the horseman's house in the town. Next to them was a couplet: "The lanterns move, the lanterns move, the lanterns stop." After watching this, Wang Anshi pondered for a long time, then clapped his hands and exclaimed: "That's right!" It's a good match, but it's a pity that there is no second line. " These words were heard by the Ma family's hometown, and they immediately went home to report to Ma Yuanwai. When Ma Yuanwai heard the news and came out, Wang Anshi had already gone to the examination room.

Coincidentally, Wang Anshi was in the exam. He was appreciated by the examiner for handing in the first paper, and the examiner called him for an interview. The examiner pointed to the flying tiger flag at the entrance of the hall and said: "Flying tiger flag, flying tiger in the flag, tiger hiding in the flag." "Wang Anshi casually said to each other, "The lantern is running, the lantern is moving, the lantern is stopping, and the horse is stopping." The examiner was so impressed when he saw that he got it right quickly and neatly.

After leaving the examination room, Wang Anshi was so proud that he strolled to the Outside Ma Yuanwai's home, he was unexpectedly recognized by his hometown courtyard and was invited to see Ma Yuanwai. Before Wang Anshi could explain the reason, Ma Yuanwai recited the couplet of "Walking Revolving Lantern" and asked the servant to bring it. With pen, ink, paper and inkstone, Wang Anshi wrote in his own hand: "Flying Tiger Flag, Flag Flying Tiger, Flag Rolling Tiger Hiding". When Ma Yuanwai saw that he was correct quickly and neatly, he promised her his daughter and chose the best one. They got married in Ma's house on the same day. It turns out that the first couplet of the revolving lantern was written by Ma Yuanwai to select a husband for Miss Ma.

After the wedding, when the bride and groom were worshiping heaven and earth, the newspaper came to announce: "Master Wang's golden list." Indicate your name and win the imperial examination. Go to the Qionglin Banquet tomorrow! "The horsemen were even more happy after hearing this, and they held the banquet again. Wang Anshi was even more happy and couldn't help but drink a few more drinks. When he was happy, he took a pen and inkstone and wrote the word "囍" on the red paper. It was posted outside the door and chanted: "The clever pairing makes a happy song, the horse lantern, the flag and the tiger tie the silk string." From then on, the word "囍" has been used as a symbol of the wedding anniversary and has been used to this day.
