According to the latest report of the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation, medical radiation has become the largest artificial source of public exposure to ionizing radiation. Scientists from Oxford University and Cancer Research Center in the UK have analyzed the statistical data of 15 countries and found that 0.6% of the cancer cases diagnosed in the UK every year are caused by X-ray examination. In Japan, where X-ray and CT examinations are more common, 3.2% of new cancer cases are caused by these two examinations every year.

X-rays have a certain destructive effect on biological cells, so the human body will have a certain physiological reaction after being irradiated by X-rays. After overexposure, it will also cause tissue damage, affect physiological functions, and even cause life-threatening. But proper irradiation will not affect human health. Because the dose used by medical staff for X-ray fluoroscopy and photography is very small, only within the safe dose. If doctors need to repeat photography or fluoroscopy, they will also consider extending the examination time. In particular, occasional chest x-ray, gastrointestinal examination, bone X-ray or angiography will not cause any adverse reactions. At the same time, in order to strengthen the protection, the unnecessary irradiated parts, especially the sensitive tissue parts, are covered with lead plates or lead-containing rubber to shorten the exposure time as much as possible. Therefore, medical X-rays can be examined and treated without any worries.

If pregnant women receive too much X-ray radiation, it is easy to cause fetal mental retardation or microcephaly, which will lead to an increase in the incidence of cancer after birth. Children exposed to radiation can easily induce thyroid diseases, and if they directly contact the lower abdomen and gonads, they will easily lead to infertility in adulthood. Adults who receive too much X-ray radiation will cause obstacles to hematopoietic function and induce malignant diseases such as leukemia. Radiation-induced radiation diseases such as radiation cataract are deterministic effects, which will only occur after the radiation dose has accumulated to a certain extent in the body. However, random effects are not. It is very likely that the disease will occur after one irradiation. The more radiation dose, the greater the chance of inducing disease. Radiation-induced cancer is a random effect. It can be seen that unnecessary radiation will increase the risk of cancer caused by radiation.

The annual acceptable dose of X-ray for adults is 5msv, that of chest X-ray is about 2.5msv, and that of CT is about 30msv. Therefore, it is suggested that an adult should not be exposed to X-rays more than once a year, and teenagers under 17 should not be exposed to X-rays for routine physical examination. China's Health Protection Standard for X-ray Examination also clearly stipulates that X-ray diagnosis should be based on radiography, because the radiation dose of radiography is less than fluoroscopy.
