Oxygen production by potassium chlorate
Extended data:
Potassium chlorate is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula KClO3. Colorless or white crystalline powder, salty and cool, strong oxidant. It is stable at normal temperature, and decomposes above 400℃ to release oxygen. When mixed with reducing agent, organic matter, flammable substances such as sulfur, phosphorus or metal powder, explosive mixture can be formed, and explosion can occur when heated sharply.
Therefore, potassium chlorate is a highly sensitive explosive. If it is doped with some impurities, sometimes it even explodes itself in the sun. It will explode when it meets concentrated sulfuric acid.
It can react with manganese dioxide as a catalyst under heating conditions to produce oxygen. Composed of ions. Potassium chlorate can never be used to react with hydrochloric acid to prepare chlorine, because it will form explosive chlorine dioxide, and pure chlorine can not be obtained at all.
Potassium chlorate is a strong oxidant. If there is a catalyst, it can be decomposed at a lower temperature and release oxygen strongly. Strong oxidation in acidic solution. When mixed with carbon, phosphorus, organic matter or combustible substances, it is easy to burn and explode.
Potassium chlorate is widely used in explosives, fireworks, firecrackers, advanced safety matches, medicines, photographic reagents, analytical reagents, oxidants and rocket and missile propellants. In the same series of propellants, the propellant containing potassium chlorate burns faster than the propellant containing ammonium chlorate, with higher minimum pressure and higher burning rate index. It can also be used as antipyretic and diuretic.
Analytical reagent. Oxidant. Potassium chlorate is catalyzed by manganese dioxide, which can generate potassium chloride and oxygen under heating conditions. The method of heating potassium chlorate is not commonly used in chemical laboratories to produce oxygen (oxygen is impure and dangerous).
Isolate the leaking and polluted areas and restrict access. It is recommended that emergency personnel wear self-contained breathing apparatus and ordinary work clothes. Don't directly contact the leakage, and don't make the leakage contact with organic matter, reducing agent and combustible substances.
