Animal specimen museum

It is the oldest specimen collection institution in China. It was gradually established and developed on the basis of the herbarium attached to the former Sinian Museum, the Institute of Static Biology, the Institute of Zoology of Beijing Research Institute, the Natural History Museum of Academia Sinica, the Palace Museum and other units, and through the efforts of several generations of scientists in the past hundred years.

The zoological museum is now concentrated in an independent specimen building, including fish and amphibian specimens, invertebrate specimens, animal specimens, bird specimens, insect specimens and digital specimens. There are more than 5.3 million kinds of animal specimens in the herbarium, accounting for 1/3 of the total collection of biological specimens of China Academy of Sciences.

The specimens collected by the herbarium include almost all major taxa and representative species distributed in China.
