How are movies rated?

The classification system refers to an organization dividing the studio's products into several levels according to their content based on certain principles, and stipulating the mass groups that each level is allowed to face. It is not backed by national law but is binding within the industry. It only serves as a reminder to the audience, but leaves the right of choice to the audience, who can protect themselves.

The American rating system

The American rating system is formulated by the MPAA. The full name of the MPAA is "The Motion Picture Association of America", which is headquartered in California (Encino, California). This organization was founded in 1922. It originally emerged as a trading organization for the film industry. Today it is involved in not only movies released in theaters, but also television, home video, and other transmission systems that may appear in the future.

The earliest rating system divided movies into four categories, namely G-level for all ages; M-level for children who must be accompanied by parents or adults; R-level for children and teenagers under 21 No one allowed in the venue x-rated. The rating system was revised twice, in 1970 and 1990, and is currently level 5 -

G level: (GENERAL AUDIENCES All ages admitted.) Popular level, all ages can watch Popular level, suitable for all ages Movies of this level have no nudity, no sex scenes, and very few scenes of drug use and violence. Conversation is also something that can often be encountered in daily life.

PG level: (PARENTAL GUIDANCE SUGGESTED Some material may not be suitable for children.) Ordinary level. It is recommended to watch it with the company of parents. Some scenes may cause discomfort. Guidance level, some content May not be suitable for children - sex, drug use, and nudity are generally absent or minimal in this category, and scenes of horror and violence do not exceed the realm of moderation.

PG-13 level: (PARENTS STRONGLY CAUTIONED Some material may be inappropriate for children under 13.) Ordinary level, but not suitable for children under 13 years old. Special counseling level, children under 13 years old must especially have parents Watch with accompaniment, some content is very inappropriate for children - movies of this level do not have scenes of crude and sustained violence, generally no nudity scenes, and sometimes drug use scenes and swear words.

R rating: (RESTRICTED Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian.) Restricted rating, those under 17 years old must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian to watch. Audiences under the age of 17 are required to be accompanied by their parents or consent to watch - films of this level contain adult content, including more scenes of sex, violence, drug use and swear words;

NC-17 level: (NO ONE 17 AND UNDER ADMITTED) Not for those aged 17 or under - films of this level are classified as adult films, and minors are strictly prohibited from watching. The film contains clear sex scenes, a large number of drug use or violence, and swear words.

Several special ratings:

NR U: NR is an unrated movie, while U is a rating for movies before 1968.

M

British film classification system

"U" rating: Normal - suitable for all audiences. In programs of this level, mild curses such as "damn" and "hell" can only be used occasionally, and other mild curses are rarely used;

"Uc" Rating: Especially suitable for children;

"PG" rating: Parental guidance level;

"12" rating: Suitable for adults over 12 years old;

"15" rating: Suitable for adults over 15 years old;

"18" rating: Suitable for adults over 18 years old.

Hong Kong film rating system

Level I: Suitable for people of any age;

Level II: Not suitable for children.

Among them -

Level IIA: Not suitable for children - the content and processing techniques are not suitable for children to watch; the film may use mild bad language and a small amount of nudity, sexual violence and horror content, it is recommended to have parental guidance;

Level IIB: Unsuitable for teenagers and children - viewers should expect that the content of the film will be more inappropriate than in Level IIA; parental guidance is strongly recommended; the film may contain some vulgar language and sexual content Subject word; can implicitly describe sexual behavior and nudity in erotic scenes; the film may contain moderate violence and horror content;

Singapore’s film rating system

The G level is a general level, which is further divided into movies suitable for all ages and PG-rated movies that require parental guidance.

NC16 is not suitable for those under 16 years of age. "Saving Private Ryan" became the first film to be included in this category in 1998 because it contained too much vulgar language.

R(A)-rated movies are restricted (artistic) movies and are only for adults over 21 years old.

Chinese Film Censorship Standards

According to film censorship regulations, our films are prohibited from containing the following content:
