Which French film describes finding a son's lover?

The English literary film adapted from Lawrence's autobiographical novel was directed by Jack Cardiff, an outstanding photographer, and won the academy award for best cinematography. The plot describes the young miner Paul as quiet and sensitive. His mother Gertrude courted her son because she disagreed with her husband who often drank. Her feelings are beyond normal maternal love. This situation affected the communication between Paul and his girlfriend miriam.
