Battle of iwo jima
Battle of Iwo Jima: the story behind American soldiers raising the national flag on Buzhe Mountain.
On February 1945 and 19, the US military officially landed on Iwo Jima. The US military is optimistic that Iwo Jima can be occupied within five days. However, contrary to expectations, the Japanese army in Iwo Jima is very cunning. Under the command of Tadao Zhongshan, they used solid and complicated underground fortifications to resist tenaciously, causing heavy casualties to the US military.
On February 20th, American troops entered the foot of Buzhe Mountain and quickly surrounded the mountain.
Bo Zhe is an extinct volcano, and the Japanese army skillfully used this mountain to build strong fortifications. This mountain has become a roadblock for American troops to advance. The Japanese army on the mountain was commanded by Kazuo Hatano. Although the mountain has been surrounded by American troops and the Japanese army in the mountain has become a trapped beast, the Japanese army still stubbornly resists and shows no sign of surrender.
In order to wipe out the Japanese army on the mountain as soon as possible, the American army tried its best. Burn with a flame thrower, throw a bomb into a hole, etc. But it is always impossible to completely destroy the Japanese army.
The siege of Banpo Mountain lasted from 20th to 23rd. The Japanese army on the mountain lacked supplies and suffered heavy casualties. With nothing to do, Guang Lai Haosi sent a telegram to the Japanese commander-in-chief of Iwo Jima, saying, "At present, the enemy is burning our army with flame throwers. If we hold our ground, we will be wiped out by the enemy. We want to rush out and make a final attack. "
Li Lin simply replied to Hou Di Kanehiko: "I think the No.1 airport will be occupied by the enemy soon, but what happened in the end to make Bu Zheshan fall in three days?"
In order to inspire the soldiers behind and boost morale. On the morning of 23rd, the US military selected 40 patrol members, led by Captain Schliere, to crawl along the steep hillside in order to plant an American flag on the top of Bo Zhe. The defenders of Buzhe Mountain have run out of ammunition and food. Seeing that the American army was climbing the mountain, we had to hit it with a big stone. The American army climbed directly into the cave and engaged the Japanese army. After several hours of fighting, Captain Schliere and five team members finally reached the top of Bo Zhe.
They tied the national flag to a pipe and then erected it on the top of the mountain. This scene happened to be seen by US Navy Secretaries James Frest and Holland Smith who were on shore inspection. Pointing to the top of the mountain, the Secretary of the Navy said to Holland Smith beside him, "Smith, raising that flag on Mount Bo Zhe means that the Marine Corps will be remembered for 500 years." This sounds heroic, and it also shows that the resistance of the US military in Iwo Jima is very great.
After the national flag was planted, the landing commander announced loudly with a megaphone: "We won Zhebo Mountain!" " ""the fifth division of the marine corps has planted the national flag on the folding bowl mountain. Well done, brothers. " As a result, the news of Bu Zheshan's victory spread all over the army.
However, the flag raised is too small for the soldiers at sea to see at all. By noon 10, almost all Japanese troops on Bo Zhe Mountain were wiped out. American soldiers found a bigger flag from the landing craft and replaced the first flag. When the second national flag was raised, three American war correspondents happened to be there. They are joe rosenthal, Bob Campbell and Bill Ginast. Rosenthal chose a better angle and shot the scene of soldiers planting flags just right.
Another reporter, Ginast, made a short film.
Joe rosenthal's photos were developed in Guam and then sent back to the United States for publication. After the photo was published, it had a great impact. After seeing it, American President Roosevelt thought that this photo well showed the heroic image of American soldiers fighting bloody battles, so he highly praised this photo. Joe rosenthal therefore won the Pulitzer Prize for photojournalism, the highest photojournalism award in the United States that year.
