This poem was written by Wang Wei when he sent his friends to the northwest frontier. Later, it was composed for musicians, and it was named "Three Layers in Yangguan". The title of this poem is also called "Twenty-one Xi's for Yuan".

Anxi, the abbreviation of Anxi Duhu, was established by the central government of the Tang Dynasty to govern the western regions, located in Qiuci City (now Kuqa, Xinjiang). Yuan Er was ordered by the imperial court to send envoys to Anxi to protect the government, and Wang Wei went to Weicheng to bid farewell because he wrote this four-line poem.
