Nan Huaijin: What are physical eyes, heavenly eyes, wisdom eyes, Dharma eyes, and Buddha eyes?

This is the five eyes of Buddhism in Buddhism. The classification of the five eyes has similar words. It was the Buddha who first raised it and asked, "Subhuti, what do you mean?" What do you mean? Does the Buddha have physical eyes, celestial eyes, wisdom eyes, Dharma eyes, and Buddha eyes? The Twelve Parts of the Tripi?aka of Buddhist scriptures are divided into twelve categories of Buddhist scriptures, one of which is "self-told", which means that you start to talk about it yourself, and are not asked by others. This section represents the self-explanation of the twelve categories, which is a question raised by the Buddha. The word "Buddha" is not mentioned here, but "Tathagata" is mentioned. The term Tathagata represents the metaphysical body of the Tao. The body of all sentient beings having the same mind and nature as the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas is the source of life. He said that there are five functions in this, so it is called the five eyes. The first type is the physical eyes, which are the same as ours. They are the physical eyes born from our parents, which are our current eyes. The physical world can be seen with the naked eye, and all our feelings and perceptions come through it. The physical eyes and the heart are connected together, so many classics discuss the heart and the eyes in the same way. When talking about the principles of the heart, the eyes are mentioned first. The eyes are a switch for the heart, so the heart and eyes are very closely related. The Taoist Yin Fu Jing says: "The eyes are the mechanism of the heart." The eyes are the switch of the heart, so the ancients mentioned the relationship between the mind and the eyes in many places; for example, Mencius talked about observing people, especially the eyes. Everyone has eyes, but each pair of eyes sees something different. As far as we humans are concerned, for example, this wall looks white to all of us. In fact, everyone’s perception of whiteness and the image of whiteness are completely different. Because some people have astigmatism, some have myopia, some have myopia in one eye, astigmatism in the other eye, and some are color blind, all kinds of different. Therefore, the hearts of all sentient beings are different, and their eyes are also different. We used to have an old saying that people's hearts are different, just like their faces; everyone's thoughts are different, just like people's faces are different. No human being in the world has the same face, so it means that no one in the world has the same thoughts in their hearts, nor the same views in their eyes. Don’t think that the white and yellow colors look similar to everyone. In fact, they are very different. Presbyopia and non-presbyopia have different degrees of presbyopia because everyone’s karma is different. Therefore, whether our body, mind, or thoughts are healthy or not depends on different castes and karma. Some people are particularly sensitive to the climate. It is very hot today. Some people are not afraid of heat but are afraid of cold! Because everyone’s body and health are different, it’s all due to different karma. It is said that all diseases are caused by karma, good karma has good karma, bad karma has bad karma, and karma is caused by the mind. This is an absolutely idealistic truth. Now the Buddha asked, does a person who has become a Buddha have ordinary physical eyes? Of course there is, the naked eye is what sees these phenomena in the physical world. The second type is the clairvoyance, which we ordinary people almost don’t have. The ability of the celestial eye transcends the material world, such as seeing ghosts, seeing gods, and even seeing other worlds. What people today talk about as clairvoyance is based on Taoist legends. The celestial eye can see things inside the desire world system, including the sun, moon, people and events on other planets, etc.; it can also see things outside the galaxy system. This is the true celestial eye. Some people see some shadows and dots of stars when they meditate, and they think they are the eyes of the heavens, but they are not. That can only be said to be, we can’t name it, let’s call it eye sky! Eyes, my God, I don’t know anything! (Audience laughs) In religion, the term “eye of heaven” refers to the sculpture of an extra eye on a Buddha statue, which represents the eye of heaven and also the eye of wisdom. Some people and some creatures not only have three eyes, but some also have four eyes. Therefore, in Buddhism, there are methods for cultivating the heavenly eye, and there are also methods for cultivating the ten eyes. There are eyes in the front, back, top of the head, heart, and throat. Of course, this is not the same as ordinary eyes, but like a camera or video recorder, it can illuminate things! There are two types of Heavenly Eyes. One is retribution. Only by practicing and practicing concentration for many lives can you have the Heavenly Eyes karma in this life. It is innate and naturally has this ability. It is the result of the retribution of good deeds. . The other is cultivation, which is achieved in this life. Because of the achievements of moral discipline, concentration, and wisdom, the heavenly eye is achieved in this life. The Heavenly Eye is not an extra eye; it is the physical eye itself, which serves another function. A person with clairvoyance is just like us ordinary people, but he will naturally see multiple worlds. For people who practice Kung Fu, their Qi vessels reach the back of their brains, their optic nerves are stimulated, and many illusions often appear in their eyes. This is not clairvoyance! Make no mistake. When a person truly has clairvoyance, his vision is as clear as lightning and his vision is very thorough; in other words, material things cannot hinder him, and his eyes naturally have the ability to see through. During the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, there was a doctor named Bian Que. It is said that he once met an immortal and gave him a see-through baby. His eyes became more powerful than X-rays and he could see the internal organs of a person. Therefore, His diagnosis would not be wrong. There are also many records after the Tang Dynasty. There are people whose eyes are naturally good at reading Feng Shui. They can see several feet underground without a detector. He can see the water veins underground very clearly. Eyes like this are not yet Heavenly Eyes, they can only be regarded as ghost eyes that report. Therefore, the real Heavenly Eyes are the eyes born from parents as mentioned in the Lotus Sutra. You must practice concentration, and then your physical eyes can see. Everything in the ten directions world. The naked eye is a common phenomenon of observing the material world, while the celestial eye can see through the world that the naked eye cannot see. Therefore, the celestial eye is born of concentration and is the magical power gained from concentration. When a person's life function is abundant to the extreme, he can pass through all physical obstacles, which is the so-called supernatural power. Magical powers can only be achieved if you have sufficient concentration and sufficient energy, energy, and spirit.

A further step is the eye of wisdom. The eye of wisdom is also inseparable from the physical eyes, and it also works through the physical eyes born from the parents. The so-called eye of wisdom is the eye of wisdom, which is the manifestation of the power of precepts, concentration, and wisdom; wisdom arises from cultivating concentration. This is not ordinary wisdom, it is wisdom that has turned into strength, and it has become the power of wisdom, and only then can we have this wise eye. How does wisdom turn into power? We ordinary smart people think about a truth and understand it. For example, smoking is bad for the lungs and should be changed. The principle makes sense, but the habit is not good. We have no power and cannot change it. Another example is a bad temper, greed, anger, and ignorance. We all know the principles, but we can't change them. Even if you study Buddhism and the principles are very clear, you can't change things when you encounter them. This is because the power of wisdom is not enough, that is, it is not possible to achieve fruition and achieve enlightenment. Therefore, true wisdom can only be achieved when the power of wisdom is sufficient. What kind of eye is Dharma Eye? Watch the sky with your wise eyes. And the body that can truly understand the emptiness and emptiness of its own nature is the Dharma Eye. The eye of Dharma sees all living beings as equal, neither empty nor existing. When light falls in the sky, it is still one side of the Hinayana fruition. Only by being able to truly observe the wonderful things in the sky. In the realm of ordinary people, it is the origin of emptiness; in the realm of enlightenment and wisdom, it is the vacuum that creates wonderful existence. This is the principle of Dharma Eye, which is to observe with equality. The fifth type is the Buddha's eye. The Buddha's eye is not only about equality, but also sees all living beings with only compassion and love. Compassion is a Buddhist term that combines two concepts. Compassion is fatherly nature, representing male love, the most benevolent love; compassion represents maternal love, the most benevolent love, and compassion is the benevolence of parents. It is the highest goodness, unconditional, and equal, so it is called great mercy. From the Buddha's eyes, all living beings are worthy of mercy, so we should give to all living beings and save all living beings. This is the compassion and equality of the Buddha's eyes. Those who truly study Buddhism and practice according to the Dharma and achieve success must possess these five eyes. If someone in the world suddenly becomes enlightened and becomes a Buddha, and immediately possesses these five functions, then the Buddha Dharma he has attained is generally correct; if he theoretically believes that he has attained enlightenment, but these five eye functions are not activated, That is self-deception. So we know that the five eyes mentioned by the Buddha are achieved by precepts, concentration and wisdom, and are a method of natural achievement. This is also a function that everyone has in their nature, but we cannot activate it because we have not practiced it. If we practice it, the function of the five eyes will naturally be activated in our life instinct. This is the first level of the problem. The second level question is, at this point in the Diamond Sutra, why did the Buddha suddenly bring up the issue of the five eyes? He asked himself, and there was no conclusion below. At least for the Five Eyes section, he only raised questions. Then he went on to talk about something else. What is the truth in it? Buddha Shakyamuni seems to be an ophthalmologist today. He opens your eyes and checks them automatically. He does not want you to register. What's the point? This represents the view, the so-called view of clear mind and nature. Once you have truly achieved enlightenment and seen your nature with a clear mind, the true state of reality will appear, and it will naturally have the function of the five eyes; therefore, wherever you see it, it is true, which is the so-called view of seeing your true nature with a clear mind. This mystery is not stated in the Diamond Sutra, but if we really study Buddhism and read the Buddhist scriptures, we cannot let go of this kind of place. This is the problem.
