Why is Guangzhou called Yangcheng?

Guangzhou is called "Yangcheng", which comes from the legend that "five sheep take the grain title and go out of the pavilion to take it". Guangzhou suffered from famine for many years. Suddenly, there was a wonderful piano sound over the South China Sea, then five colorful auspicious clouds floated by and five immortals appeared. The immortals asked the five-color fairy sheep rice ear to give the good rice ear to the people of Guangzhou, and then disappeared. Five immortals sheep turned into stone sheep and stayed on the hillside of Guangzhou. After the ears of rice are planted, there is a bumper harvest every year. People in Guangzhou are grateful for the immortal sheep, so they call Guangzhou "Yangcheng".

The source of "Yangcheng":

At the end of the Western Zhou Dynasty, Chu, a vassal state, built a city called Chuting in what is now Guangzhou. One year, there was a great famine in Chuting, and there were no crops in the field, and the roadside victims were everywhere.

One day, melodious music suddenly came from the sky in the South China Sea, and five colorful auspicious clouds appeared. Five immortals dressed in colorful clothes came to Guangzhou on fairy sheep with different colors and different ears of rice. The immortal gave the good ears of rice to the people of Guangzhou and wished that there would never be a famine in this area. Then the five immortals flew away, and the fairy sheep became a stone sheep and stayed on the hillside of Guangzhou.

Since then, the wheat harvest in Guangzhou has been bumper every year, and Guangzhou has become the richest place in Lingnan. Later, people called Guangzhou "Five Yangcheng", "Guangzhou City" or "Yangcheng". In order to commemorate the immortals, Guangzhou people built the Wudang Five Immortals Temple in Huifu Road, Guangzhou. There are statues of five immortals and five sheep in the main hall of the temple. Now there is a huge red sandstone concave stone like a footprint on the east side of Xianmiao, which is called immortal thumb print, that is, thumb print refers to footprints.

The beautiful legend of Guangzhou's "Five Immortals Sheep" reflects the romantic and beautiful character of Guangzhou people, as well as their expectation for a bumper harvest and yearning for a better life.
