In order to build a garden city and improve the taste of the city, at the beginning of 2002, the new municipal party committee and government decided to carry out a comprehensive transformation of Bayi Square. The transformed Bayi Square, with the theme of highlighting the "Bayi" history and culture, covers an area of 78,000 square meters and is divided into two axes and three zones. Two axes: one axis is the main axis of the North-South Square, centering on the Bayi Memorial Tower, passing through the center of the central sinking square to the music fountain, and ending the water curtain film; Along the main axis, there are glass trails, flag stands, sunken plaza and Yanlou. The other axis is the landscape secondary axis of the east-west square, with the restoration of the original appearance of the provincial exhibition hall as the landscape center, the lawn outside sunken plaza inclines from east to west, and the torch, the combined sculpture of the three armed forces and the provincial exhibition hall are set in the center, forming a complete landscape secondary axis.
Three areas: the southern memorial area, the central cultural area in the middle and the northern leisure area.
Memorial area: centering on the August 1st Uprising Memorial Hall, radiating around the small memorial square. On the east and west sides are evergreen trees and black pines, which form a natural green barrier, separating the memorial area from the surrounding downtown, showing the solemn atmosphere of the memorial area. A Jinshui River in the north of the memorial area has become the defining element of functional space and landscape space, with a waterfront stage on the central axis of the south bank and an ornamental space on the north bank. Across the Jinshui River is the unique Jinshui Bridge. The rebuilt monument was raised from 45.5 meters to 53.58 meters.
Central Cultural District: The sunken space below shows the landscape space with the theme of Bayi Culture. Around the theme of "Bayi Henghui", sunken plaza has arranged eight reliefs of soldiers, placed a torch and a sculpture of the three armed forces on the central ground, and pointed out the theme of the Bayi Uprising: A single spark can start a prairie fire. To the north of the eight military reliefs are the landscape reliefs of national scenic spots in Jiangxi Province (Jinggangshan, Lushan, Sanqingshan, Sanbaishan, Longhushan, Fairy Lake, Meiling and Guifeng) which reflect the regional culture. Some of the high platforms around the sinking square expanded southward, forming a national flag platform, which became the defining element of the northern part of the civic square. The sunken square is oval with a radius of 32 meters and 36 meters respectively.
Recreation area: it is defined by the dry water curtain film and the national flag platform, and the water curtain film and the central section of the civic activity area form an ornamental system. A 6-meter-wide glass walkway in the center leads directly to the flag platform of the flag-raising ceremony. Under the trail, there is an inscription on the building of the square. Trees are planted on both sides of the activity area, and seats are set for tourists to rest.
On the west side of the square is the famous "Bayi Avenue". Before liberation, the subgrade of Bayi Avenue was the old city wall of Nanchang. After liberation, the city wall was demolished, and this avenue named Chang 'an Street was built in Nanchang, which is ten miles long and sixty meters wide. There are many famous buildings in Nanchang on both sides of the street. Nanchang Telecom Building, located in the south of the square, was built in the 1950s, which was a project aided by the Soviet Union. The Jiangxi Exhibition Hall in the center of the square was built in 1969, with the name "Long live the victory of Mao Zedong Thought", which has strong characteristics of the times. Now it has been transformed into a provincial exhibition hall, holding various exhibitions. Bayi Avenue is also an important commercial center, with Lihua Shopping Plaza and Xindadi Computer City in the south and Wanda Shopping Plaza and Wal-Mart Supermarket in the north.
The transformed Bayi Square is more spacious and transparent. The theme design of "Bayi Henghui" enriches the space of the square, enhances the cultural taste of the city and broadens the expression of historical connotation. It is a comprehensive city square with commemorative, symbolic, mass and leisure features, which fully shows the new features of Nanchang as a garden city and a hero city.
