Interpretative translation
Confucius said, "I'm not afraid that others don't understand me, but I'm afraid that I don't understand others."
Zhu quoted Yin's words in his notes to explain. Yin is Yin Yanming, a disciple of Cheng Yi. "Yin Shi said: A gentleman wants to be with me, so he doesn't have to be ignorant by others. I don't know people, I can't tell right from wrong, so I feel bitter. " This bitterness is bitterness. What worries me is not that others don't know themselves, but that I don't know others.
Yin Zhu said, "A gentleman wants me." A gentleman does not do what he wants, but what he wants. Everything is to reflect on yourself. He never wants to ask outside, he wants to ask inside, asking for me instead of people. Since I want to, I don't need to worry about whether others know me. It doesn't matter whether people know themselves. What worries me is my lack of moral knowledge. If you have high moral knowledge, why worry that others don't understand you? I have a way, virtue and knowledge, but people don't know it. I just don't have a chance to use it, but I have a gift and I don't need it. It's providence, there's nothing to worry about.
If you don't know anyone, it's a huge disaster. Why? Right and wrong, evil, right and wrong. We can't tell what other people are like, whether what we do is right or wrong, whether it is evil or right, which will lead to anxiety. For example, we are virtuous and knowledgeable, and hope to serve the society and all living beings. When someone invites us out of the mountain, we also need to know whether it is worth helping him, whether this person is a good Lord or a wise Lord. The ancients said: "Good birds choose wood to live in, and good ministers choose the opportunity to walk." . Only when you know this person well can you judge whether you should go out to help him. If he is not a virtuous man, but only pursues fame and fortune, he just dresses up with your virtue and knowledge, just like Zheng Kangcheng in the Eastern Han Dynasty we just talked about. He was hired by the imperial court many times, including the then consort He Jin, who invited him to work with generous gifts, but all of them were rejected by Zheng Kangcheng. Why? There is no wise Lord. These people are rich and famous, and they don't deserve me to come out. This is to know people.
Then as a leader, you should also know how to choose talents and appoint people. There are often swift horses, but Bole is not often. A swift horse is a metaphor for a talented person. Talented people don't mean you can't find them. He is an English master who really understands talents. It's hard. Therefore, leaders should not be talented, which is also ignorance and annoyance. Then people who study should also know how to choose good teachers and friends. Confucius said, "He who has no friends is not as good as himself." . We choose these people who must be more talented and better than ourselves to be teachers and friends, so we should also know others. If you can't tell his virtue from stupidity, right from wrong, evil from right, it's a catastrophe. This is what the master said here.
Mr Yan Yi said in The Analects: "If you are an egoist, you must learn from your teachers and friends, and you must understand others. Altruism should be based on disease and medicine, especially knowing people. The goal of learning the Holy Way is self-interest and altruism. "University" mentioned that "the way of a university is to show virtue, to be close to the people, and to stop at perfection". Whose virtue is "Ming Ming De"? Know your virtue. Mingde used to have it, but it is not clear now. So we should learn it and repair it. Removing the obstacles of Mingde will make Mingde appear. This is Mingde. So it is self-interested and beneficial to him. If we want to be virtuous, we must learn from our teachers and friends. Confucius himself said that he was not born to know, and he should learn to know. To learn, you must have a mentor and be close to good knowledge. " It is infinitely beautiful to be kind to others. "That is about to know people, know whether people are true, kind and knowledgeable. Therefore, to know people, it is for personal gain, choose teachers and friends.
Altruism, we learn the Holy Way, not only for our own interests, but also to help others. Not only know your own virtue, but also help others know your own virtue. This is altruism. It is the "being close to the people" mentioned in "University" that helps all beings break through myths, gain enlightenment, and get pleasure from suffering. Where is he fascinated? You have to understand, you have to know. Just like a doctor treating a disease, you should know where the patient's disease is and what medicine to give. Your prescription is the right medicine. If you don't know the root cause of his illness, then your curative effect is definitely not good. Therefore, "understand people better", when you help others, you also know him and where his illness lies.
Like we are now learning the way of sages and going deep into the classics every day, this is egoism. Every day we share our learning experience in the studio and study with like-minded friends all over the world through the internet. This is altruism. How do we explain the classics of ancient sages? Just like dealing with diseases and drugs, it depends on what diseases people are suffering from now. What you said should hit the nail on the head, so that he can really wake up after hearing it, turn over a new leaf and cure the disease, which requires knowing people. If you don't know what's wrong with the public now, there is nothing wrong with reading the meaning like this, but the public will not benefit. Therefore, the explanation must be combined with our lives, what mistakes will be made every day, and it must be to the point.
Therefore, to explain opportunities, truth is the truth of sages. We must conform to this point, and we can't just talk nonsense. A machine is a machine. What is the root machine of Volkswagen now? You must conform to the roots of the public. If the reason is not an opportunity, it is empty talk, useless, the public is not interested, and it is useless to listen; If the opportunity is unreasonable, it's called demonic anger and nonsense. It sounds interesting and meets the public's taste, but it makes sense, which is even more inappropriate. Therefore, it is wise to talk about the truth of sages and the opportunity to reason.
Knowing people, how to know people? Confucius said in the Analects of Confucius: "If you don't know what you say, you can't know who you are." You should judge a person's character by his words, because words are a manifestation of his psychology. What he thinks will naturally be expressed in his words, through which he can distinguish right from wrong, good from evil. You can say that the current media, TV programs and news reports are oriented by a language, and we can judge what is wrong with the society by listening. If the media desperately talk about how to make money and get benefits, instead of talking about benevolence and righteousness, as Mencius said when he met Liang, "it is dangerous for the state to pay taxes from top to bottom", we will know what is wrong with society. Everyone talks about competition and the pursuit of interests, and there will be a crisis in society. This crisis, including natural disasters, has been felt by people. People should be kind, and heaven should bless them; People respond with ill feelings, and days respond with disasters, and natural disasters will appear. It also includes man-made, such as economic crisis and financial tsunami. Man-made disasters are wars, and these are crises. After all, we pay too much attention to profit and neglect righteousness.
Mencius said, "How can you talk about profit? Only benevolence and righteousness. " . We really advocate the way of benevolence and righteousness, and society will naturally benefit from it. Just talking about profits, not only is there no righteousness, but the crisis will follow. Therefore, it depends on people's wisdom to help society return to the tradition of ethics and morality in all aspects, and to help people turn evil into good and mean into good.
Not only should you know what you said first, then you know who you are, but you should also "listen to what you say and watch what you do." Knowing Chinese characters is the first level, and we have to observe their actions and behaviors. If his words and deeds are different and he says beautiful things, but his behavior is not like this, then we still have to judge by his behavior. So it's really wise to know people. This kind of wisdom, one is experience, life experience is rich, he will have this kind of wisdom, but this kind of wisdom is not perfect, there is really perfect wisdom to know people, so you should be pure inside. Let go of those selfish and well-known pursuits, and your heart will be clean, your mind will be clear, and it will be easy to perceive each other's psychology. So how did wisdom come from? Or do you want to put it down? The more you put in, the wiser you become.
Here, we will complete a part of The Analects of Confucius, with a total of 16 chapters. "Learning while writing" can be said to be the most important article in The Analects of Confucius, and it is a program for learning saints. It can be said that this article also covers 20 Analects of Confucius, and the truth is all here. In fact, the teachings of sages are many and many, and thousands of words can be consistent. You see Kong Old Master Q told Ceng Zi that Ceng Zi is a descendant of Confucius, and Confucius said, "I am consistent." No matter how much I say, it will sum up into one. Ceng Zi reluctantly told us that "loyalty and forgiveness are enough", and loyalty and forgiveness also cover the whole sage's intention.
If we make an outline of the 20 articles in The Analects of Confucius and summarize them in one sentence, we can use the first sentence of "learning while writing", and it is consistent that "learning is better than speaking". The way of sages lies in learning words. "Learning from time to time" covers the whole Analects of Confucius. "All scholars know". What is learning for? Consciousness. Consciousness is the knowledge of practice. So what is the way of sages? Consciously, that is, "Ming" in "University". The first word "Ming" in Ming Ming De means enlightenment, which is very clear. Let go of what you don't know, let go of what you don't know, you will understand, you will feel, and you will become a saint.
Therefore, learning consciousness, implementing consciousness and practicing consciousness means practicing kung fu and putting it down. Let go of the unconscious, the good or the unknown. What is it? Selfishness, fame and fortune, the enjoyment of five desires and six dusts, and the troubles of greed and laziness are all insensitive and bad, and they should all be put down. You can always remind yourself to be vigilant. This is "learning while learning". Never learn, never learn. If you really do it, if you really let go, you won't be happy. This is not pleasant, you are the happiness of a saint. This kind of happiness is beyond ordinary people's experience. It comes from the self, not the stimulation from the outside. The money, food and sleep brought from outside are called excitement, which is not happiness, let alone joy. So "unhappy" happiness means that you really get benefits, and you can prove it.
Therefore, the way of sages has four stages: belief, explanation, action and proof. Learning is understanding, learning from time to time is good, and your "unhappy" is proof. The more you learn, the happier you will be. Finally, you won the Great Sage. You are so happy. Therefore, "learning while writing" can be said to be programmatic and summarized as such. If you really understand the sixteen chapters of "learn from the times", you will have no problem becoming a saint. The following nineteen articles explain how to become a saint in more detail.
Comment and analysis
This passage is the way of life taught by Confucius to students. Some readers say that this is Confucius' thought of being poor and happy, and not seeking fame and status. This explanation may not be appropriate. This is not consistent with Confucius' consistent proposition. In Confucius' concept, "learning to be excellent is to be an official, which is a positive attitude towards joining the WTO." The subtext here is: in the process of understanding others, let others know themselves.
