Born in Shanghai in 1959, he is a professor and doctoral supervisor at the School of Journalism at Fudan University, deputy director of the Visual Culture Research Center of Fudan University, and a researcher at the Information and Communication Center of Fudan University. In 1998, he graduated from the Graduate School of Human Culture, Osaka Prefecture University, Japan, majoring in Comparative Cultural Studies, and received an academic doctorate. From 1991 to 1993, he studied at the Department of International Culture, Kobe University, Japan; in 2001, he visited the University of California, Berkeley.
