What are the magical astronomical wonders in the world?
The afterglow of the setting sun and the faint halo of the fledgling moon add a lot of color to this photo of rocket smoke curling in the night sky.
This digital image taken to the west was taken at the tablemountain Observatory in California on September 19, 2002.
At the time of shooting, the "Militia III" solid fuel rocket with smoke marks had flown far away. From vandenberg air force base (Vandenberg Air Force
The launched rocket will carry a test load over thousands of kilometers of the Pacific Ocean.
The sunset that day dyed its smoke trail red/orange, and even rendered the top of the smoke trail white in Liang Cheng, while the full moon just rising from the east painted the bottom of the smoke trail pale white. The cloud-like gas at the top of the smoke trail is produced by rocket propulsion separation. The water vapor in this part of the smoke instantly forms ice crystals in the cold high air, and because it is still bathed in sunlight, many tiny rainbows are produced.
2. Meteors and Aurora
Star watchers reported that the Perseid meteor shower appeared as scheduled in the early morning of August 12 to 13, and there was a meteor every few minutes.
On the night of August 1 1, with Perseus rising off the ground, astrophotographer WadeClark was waiting to shoot a meteor across the sky at Baker Hill Ski Resort in northern Washington, USA, but at the same time he was lucky enough to see a beautiful Northern Lights performance.
So when taking pictures, he put the star of Perseus in the center of the upper field of view, so that the meteor of Perseus would pass through the beautiful aurora. In 2000, the then active sun staged the same beautiful scenery as the Perseid meteor shower.
3. Leave Seattle this month
Does the moon near the ground look bigger?
The answer is no, as shown above, no matter where the moon is in the sky, its size is almost the same.
The cause of this common moon illusion is still the focus of debate. The two most common explanations are that the origin of illusion is that foreground objects make the moon near the ground look far away.
The oldest and most widely accepted saying is that the human brain will interpret distant objects as larger, while the newer saying further explains the illusion of distance, which makes human eyes focus differently.
In any case, the diameter of the moon is actually about 0.5 degrees. The above time series image taken at the end of last year briefly exposed the moon every 2.5 minutes, and the last exposure took a long time to bring out the beautiful panorama of Seattle.
Can you point out the comet in the picture above? The cold sky in Alaska shows obvious and colorful auroras, and just below the left, an inconspicuous celestial body stands out in the background: Comet Ikegami, the brightest comet in recent years, now appears in the east before sunrise, almost invisible to the naked eye. This comet is actually a huge snowball covered with dust. It spent most of its life traveling in the outer solar system, and now it is going back to where it came from. The following photo was taken on March 20th, when Comet Ikeya Zhang reached its maximum brightness.
5. The new moon embraces the old moon
This picture shows the phenomenon commonly known as "the new moon embraces the old moon". The dark gray light faintly visible in the crescent arm is actually the light reflected from the sun shining on the moon. This photo was taken by LaurentLaveder, an astrophotographer at PicduMidi Observatory.
6. Galaxies are all made up of stars, but are all the stars in galaxies? That's not true.
Using the Hubble telescope, the scientists of the female galaxy cluster in the research room found about 600 red giant stars.
Floating in the vast space between galaxies. The artist painted the sky that can be seen from the planet around such a lonely sun, where the night sky scene is completely different from that on the earth. The night sky of the earth is full of stars-members of our Milky Way galaxy, and the stars left by the red sun that hardly falls in the sky are all members of various dim and fuzzy galaxies-Virgo Cluster. This lonely sun was probably thrown out when galaxies collided a long time ago.
7. The Secret of Black Aurora
Black aurora is a dark area between usually bright auroras, which is often recorded in aurora images.
However, few people question its origin. Recently, scientists have solved the mystery of the black aurora by using the data provided by four satellites named "Cluster" in Earth orbit.
Normal aurora is the glow of electrons or negatively charged particles rushing to the earth's atmosphere along the earth's magnetic field, hitting the molecules in the earth's atmosphere and ionizing them. Black aurora is a phenomenon that negatively charged particles in the earth's ionosphere are sucked out of the gap of the earth's magnetic field lines.
This dark anti-aurora extends to a height of 20 thousand kilometers, sometimes lasting for several minutes.
In this image taken in fairbanks, Alaska, USA, a black aurora between normal and bright auroras can be clearly seen.
8. The starlight of Kilimanjaro
On a moonless night, when the stars are clearest, DanHeller, who filmed this scene, camped on Mount Mt.Kilimanjaro at an altitude of 4,800 meters in Africa, and spent three and a half hours in the exposure time to shoot this beautiful scene.
In this photo, except for the dim lights in the tent and the green distant city lights, most of the brightness of the scenery comes from starlight. The scene faces north, and Polaris is located near the horizon, on the far left of the photo. The dragging starlight draws a beautiful concentric arc.
