The Storm of the Wharf (directed by elia kazan 1954)
One of the most famous scenes in film history-Marlon Brando and the White Gloves. From the seaside, from the 40th second to the 2nd minute and 03rd second.
In the film, Brando plays Terry as a gangster who is responsible for the death of Edie's brother. He wants to meet Edie and talk. Brando picked up his gloves. In this case, most actors will give it back to each other, which is natural and will not interrupt the progress of the play. However, Brando unexpectedly played with gloves and seemed not ready to return them. Eva marie saint, who played opposite him, was a little at a loss at the moment. She wanted to reach out and pick it up, but she didn't know whether Brando would pay her back, so she shrank back. Her mind should turn around several times in one second. At this time, the two men walked to a swing and Terry sat on it. He carefully took off the dust on his glove, kept pulling his finger sleeve and put it on his hand.
The gloves are small, and Terry may feel a little tight. He has been looking for words (he is nervous, but he has been hiding it well, and Edie's nervousness is written on his face, and he doesn't know where to look). In the process, Edie aimed at the gloves many times. She wanted to get it back, but she never seemed to get the chance. Finally, when Terry took out the gum and put it in his mouth, Edie suddenly stepped forward-they had kept a certain distance before-and took the gloves from Terry.
These movements about gloves were inadvertently completed by Brando and Eve in rehearsal, which originated from a mistake, but the actor took advantage of this mistake and gave the play more meaning. For Terry, he wants to turn over a new leaf, but he doesn't know if he is qualified to do so. His inner hesitation was completely expressed through gloves. He put it on awkwardly, as if experiencing Edie's life or position (of course, some people will interpret his behavior as a kind of rape), and finally he was infected by Edie's kindness and purity. Edie's attitude of wanting to get her gloves back at any time shows that she is not ready to accept him, and they are still in a hostile state.
It is not surprising that Brando can improvise like this. It's not entirely because he is a actors studio law student personally taught by Kazan. In fact, it can be said that he is the natural expression of his own temperament. Brando is tall and strong, full of masculinity, which is recognized by everyone. But he actually has a certain femininity, or childlike innocence, which is reflected in many of his films and stage performances. He playfully put on a lady's glove, which is the expression of this childish and feminine feeling.
