Erect perennial herb of Labiatae, with erect stems and purple or white flowers, whose flowering period is from July to September. It has a wide range of temperature adaptation, likes humidity and light, and is suitable for weak acid soil. Stems and leaves can be distilled to extract spearmint oil, which can be used as medicine or food.
Originated in southern Europe, Canary Islands, Madeira Islands, Soviet Union. China, Henan, Hebei, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Guangdong, Guangxi, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan and other places have cultivated or fled to the wild, and Xinjiang has wild. Type specimens were collected from Europe.
Extended data
When the average temperature of the day is higher than 5℃ and the soil temperature is higher than 2℃, the roots, stems, scales and buds of spearmint begin to germinate. The optimum temperature for the growth period is 25-30℃, and it can grow normally when it is higher than 30-40℃. When planted before and after beginning of winter, underground rhizomes can safely survive the winter.
Spearmint needs more water in the early and middle stages of growth, but it needs sufficient sunshine and dry climate in the bud stage, which is beneficial to the growth of oil gland cells. Therefore, it is suitable to grow in China subtropical monsoon humid climate zone.
Spearmint is a light-loving plant, and its leaves are not only the organs of photosynthesis, but also the main places for storing essential oils. High planting density and poor ventilation and light transmission between plants lead to high branch nodes, few branches and easy leaf shedding, which affects the yield and quality of essential oil.
Spearmint has low requirements for soil, and loose sandy soil is the best, and neutral soil has suitable pH value. Because of the large aboveground biomass of spearmint, there is a great demand for fertilizer, especially nitrogen fertilizer.
