Soviet montage theory
(1) Kuleshov (1899-1970) was the founder of the montage school in the former Soviet union.
Curry Schouw effect:
Mo Youxin's face with no specific expression+a pot of soup → hungry.
+a coffin → heartbreak
+A little girl → Kindness
With the help of this experiment, Kuleshov proved that new meaning and new artistic quality can be obtained by juxtaposing different shots purposefully.
Kuleshov saw the possibility, rationality and psychological basis of montage and founded the theory of "film mode". He came to the conclusion that it is not the content of a single shot that causes the emotional reaction of the film, but the juxtaposition between several pictures; A single shot is only the material, and only by creating montage can it become a film art. He put forward a positive creative program: the structural basis of the film comes not from the real material, but from the spatial structure and montage.
Creative geographical montage;
A young man came from left to right.
A young woman came from right to left.
They met and shook hands, and the young man lit it with his finger.
A white building with broad steps.
(5) Two people walk up the steps.
When the audience saw this clip, they had the impression that two men and women who knew each other, from the left and right sides of the same street, met and walked into a white building together.
Kuleshov explained the montage effect of "creative photography" and "creative geography" through this experiment, and also explained the narrative function of "montage".
Eisenstein (1898 ——1948) raised montage from film technology to film aesthetics for the first time in the world film history.
Key point: The juxtaposition of two montage shots is not the sum of two numbers, but the product of two numbers.
Mouth+dog = barking bird+mouth = singing mouth+child = wailing.
Vaudeville montage:
Ansenstein comprehensively expounded his drama theory-vaudeville montage in the article "Vaudeville Montage", and advocated that wonderful, unforgettable and unexpected performance segments should be the basis of drama, and the particularly wonderful moments that would cause some emotional shock should be synthesized under a unified theme.
In fact, the montage of vaudeville is to separate two shots taken at different times and places from the original continuity of time and space. If they are connected in some way, it will produce a new look and an inherent concept in the shots of unedited films. Although they are not related to each other, they are listed together according to the editor's wishes, but they often produce a "third thing" that goes against the original intention and become interrelated.
In other words, Eisenstein tried to form a triple meaning beyond the two shots through the intentional combination of two different shots, and the intentional combination of the two shots produced a new meaning of "1+ 1 > 2".
The role of montage
(1) generalization and concentration
Through the cutting and combination of shots, scenes and paragraphs, the material is selected and accepted, so that the performance content is clear and clear, and it is highly summarized and concentrated.
(2) Attract the audience's attention and stimulate their association.
Although each shot only shows a certain content, a certain shot sequence can standardize and guide the audience's emotions and psychology and inspire the audience to think.
⑶ Create a unique film time and space.
By means of montage, the narrative of the film has gained great freedom in the use of time and space. A skill (or jump directly) can jump from Paris to new york in space, or span decades in time. ...
The use of montage enables film artists to greatly compress or expand the actual time in their lives. Montage's ability to manipulate time and space enables the film artist to capture the lens that he thinks can best clarify the essence of life according to his analysis of life.
