Chongqing photography

19 16, American photographer Gambo came to China for the second time. He set out from Zhejiang with his partners and traveled along the Yangtze River. On 19 17, he visited Sichuan Province.

This set of pictures recorded what Gan Bo saw and heard on his way to Tongliang County (now Tongliang District of Chongqing) that summer, and vividly reproduced the true image of the land of abundance more than 100 years ago.

The members of the expedition are on their way to Tongliang by sedan chair, while the bearers and porters are crossing a small mound in vilen.

In a roadside inn, the employees of the motorcade are sitting in front of the door to have a rest. The close-up shows some luggage of the delegation, which is large and light. These people carry them all the way with a pair of iron shoulders

This bridge is called "Knight Bridge" by Gambo. It has a unique shape, just like it is composed of several "ten" characters. The picture shows the porters of the expedition crossing the bridge, and the team stretches for a long time, showing a large number of people.

Four bearers carrying a westerner are passing a simple single-hole stone bridge. Above the bridge opening, there is a unique faucet carved.

"It is difficult to get through the Shu Road, and it is difficult to go to the sky." The picture shows several bearers carrying a foreigner across the river. A pole actually needs seven porters to carry it, which shows that the local mountains are high and the water is urgent and the road is difficult.

It's very hot, so everyone should often stop and take a nap. This is a bridge at the foot of the mountain. The farmer was drying food on a solid bridge deck, and his wife stood by with her child in her arms. In a teahouse not far away, employees hid under the eaves to drink.

Several young porters are sitting on the side of the road to have a rest. There is a small stone tower next to it, which says "font". This is a precious paper burning tower. In the past, this kind of small tower can be seen in many places. When people find words and papers on the ground, they will consciously collect them and burn them here to show their respect for China's square words and culture.

After wading all the way, I finally saw the gate of Tongliang City. Tongliang has a long history. As early as the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, Chu Weiwang's illegitimate child was sealed here and named "Tongliang Hou".

Tongliang is located in the northwest of Chongqing, and its name comes from "Little Tongliang Mountain" in China. There are many cultural relics and historic sites in its territory. The stone lion in the picture has a beautiful shape and smooth lines. I don't know how many years it has existed.

On the ancient streets, stone roads and stone steps, a man is leading a cow carrying goods through. Next to him, a young woman hurried by.

The annual Town God Festival, the narrow streets are crowded. There are dragon and lion dancers in the parade, as well as big-headed dolls with masks. The drummer followed the team, playing and singing all the way, which was very lively.

This photo was accurately captured by photographer Gambo. There are old people, middle-aged people, young people and children in the photo, which vividly presents the image of four generations in Tongliang area.

An old man with a white beard was sitting on a bamboo chair on the street with a long cigarette rod in his hand. The old man wears glasses, his upper body is skinny and his feet are a pair of sandals. He lived in the dark late Qing Dynasty almost all his life.

In a horseshoe-nailing workshop in the city, a big horse with a chew was tied to a crossbar, and a group of local people stood by, not looking at the big horse, but at the photographer. Only two children are not interested in foreigners and play by themselves.

In a rice processing workshop, two workers are pushing rice to shell. The shape of rice husk is similar to that of a mill. When rice is put into it, the rice husk can be removed by rolling. There is also a device called a fan next to the rice husk, which uses wind to separate the white rice from the chaff.

Under a big tree, a young mother sat on a stool with her child in her arms, with a bare old tree root behind her. I have no idea how old it is.
