It is understood that this is the first time that ugly ducks have been observed in Beijing, probably because of migration and other reasons.

At the exit of the sluice in the east section of Anzhenmen, the ruins park of the Yuan Dynasty. This ugly duck hovers over the water under the sluice, occasionally lowering its head to suck water plants, or diving to prey on small fish. In appearance, ugly ducks are slightly smaller than ordinary wild ducks, and their feathers are gray, but there are obvious white feather spots on both sides of their heads.

"I have been flying for more than 20 days, staying here every day and not going anywhere else." Mr. Zhang lives nearby and is a photographer. According to his observation, this ugly duck seems to like this water area very much. It preys on small fish and loach during the day and lives in a culvert next to the sluice at night.

"Ugly ducks are not naturally distributed in Beijing, nor are they breeding grounds. There was no observation record before. This should be the first time that ugly ducks have appeared in Beijing. " Wu Jiwei, an expert who has been engaged in wildlife protection for many years in the Municipal Bureau of Landscaping and Greening, went to Yuandadu Park yesterday and got a close look at this ugly duck. According to reports, ugly ducks mainly breed in inland areas along the North Pacific and North Atlantic coasts, including Lake Baikal and Siberia; Overwintering in relatively warm coastal areas, including the Korean Peninsula and Japan, is only a rare transit bird in China.

It was identified that the ugly duck in Yuan Dadu was a female bird. Why is it here alone? Wu Jiwei speculated that it was probably a bird that was left here and lost for various reasons during the migration. In the observation of wild birds, this kind of bird that is not distributed locally and transits by chance is also called "lost bird". Considering that the breeding ground of ugly ducks is in the north, this "rare visitor" won't stay in Beijing for long. It is expected that the weather will continue to migrate to the north after it gets warmer.
