1 193 BC, Priam, king of Troy, and his handsome second son Prince Paris were warmly received in the palace of Menelaus, king of Sparta, Greece. However, Paris fell in love with Menelaus' beautiful wife Helen at first sight and took her out of the palace. The angry Menelaus and his brother Agamemnon, king of Mycenae, attacked Troy.
Achilles and hector, the youngest son of Priam, commander-in-chief of the Greek allied forces, gradually became heroes of both sides in the war.
Because Troy was strong and easy to defend but difficult to attack, the Greek army confronted the Trojan warriors 10 years. Finally, the hero Odysseus put forward a clever plan to let all the Greek soldiers board the warships, creating the illusion of withdrawing troops, and deliberately leaving a huge Trojan horse in front of the city.
Troy happily brought the Trojan horse into the city as a trophy. That night, while the Trojans were drinking and singing, 20 Greek soldiers hiding in Troy broke out and opened the gate. Troy was immediately captured and the whole city was looted and burned. The old king and most men were killed, women and children were sold into slavery, and Helen was taken back to Greece. The war that lasted for 10 years is finally over.
Troy: A Tragic Epic Walking Down from the Altar
Western civilization originated from ancient Greek civilization. Homer's epic is a treasure in ancient Greek literature and art. As one of the sources of world civilization, this masterpiece has always inspired the wisdom and imagination of future generations. The Hollywood movie Troy, which was released in May 14, is the latest tribute to Homer's epic.
Different from the previous adaptation of Loyalty to the Original, Troy has greatly revised the Iliad in Homer's epic, removing all the mythological colors, and turning a melee between man and god into a tragic epic about war, love, heroes and legends with human beings as the main body.
one
Like the original, the story of Troy centers on Achilles, the first Greek warrior. From the beginning, the film shaped his image as a "god of war" and showed the contradiction between him and Agamemnon, the most powerful king in Greece at that time. Next, we are all familiar with the story of stealing Helen and mass siege. Because the Iliad ended after the death of hector, the main commander of Troy, the rest of the plot of Troy refers to the beginning of the Odyssey and other ancient Greek legends, and finally ends with the fate of Achilles.
In addition to myth, Troy also modified some relationships and plots in Homer's epic. For example, in the original work, Seyis, the daughter of the priest of Apollo Temple, and Briseis, the female prisoner of Achilles, became the same person in the film, and Patroclus changed from a friend of Achilles to a cousin. Agamemnon's fate in the film was much more dramatic than in the original work. In addition, in the original book, the Battle of Troy lasted for ten years. Although "Iliad" begins with Achilles' anger and only focuses on the most wonderful 565,438+0 days, it is impossible and unnecessary for a two-or three-hour movie to describe it in too many details. So, the battle of Troy, in the movie, seems to be two or three days.
This choice and change, in my opinion, is successful and conforms to the narrative characteristics and rhythm of the film. Ten years of war, the film is not unspeakable, just a few simple subtitles; However, the real attraction of melodrama film lies in the coherence and compactness of the plot, especially for such a large-scale commercial film. Highlighting the theme of the original work, rather than haggling over fictional time details, is the correct way to grasp the essence of the original work From this perspective, I appreciate the narrative rhythm of the film. In the first fifteen minutes, the film expounds the cause of the greatest war and the relationship and personality of the main characters, but there is no sign of haste and impatience, which shows the director's excellent control ability. At the beginning of the film, a typical "voice grabbing" technique was used. Achilles' bravery and arrogance left a deep first impression on people, so that the audience could easily understand the story that happened to him later.
As a film that shows the war process for nearly three hours in 85% of the time, and it is a linear development story, Troy is not as dull or excessive as I expected; On the contrary, many scenes in the film strongly attracted me. What's more, it not only attracted my eyes, but also my heart. Although I have memorized Homer's story, I am still angry at Paris' irresponsibility, extremely sad at Hecktor's loyalty and helplessness, and sympathetic and sad at Achilles' personal tragedy in the process of watching movies. ...
It can be said that Troy not only revived the theme expressed in Homer's epic, but also made it easier for ordinary people to understand. The fate of the characters in the original work is impermanent and the corresponding tragedy can also be said that people are played by boring gods; However, in this film, it is precisely because of all the mythological factors that the fate of the characters becomes completely driven by their respective personalities and environments; Therefore, all kinds of twists and turns in the original work that need to be arranged by God are deeply branded with the imprint of human nature. The fragility, greed, courage and loyalty of the people with God's meaning in the original work can finally show their "prototype". Some people may say that this vulgarizes the noble artistic epic, but I think that as long as more people can better understand human beings, such vulgarization will only be beneficial, not harmful.
two
Just as a great war needs a great warrior, an epic movie needs an epic scene.
Troy is well-behaved in this respect. It's not that it's not bad or shocking, but there are movies like Gladiator and The Lord of the Rings, and many scenes in this movie imitate the way of the above two movies, so at least some impression points are creatively reduced.
Virtual photography seems to be more and more useful when shooting big scenes in Hollywood. The spectacular overlooking lens of Rome in Gladiator and the swaying lens of the Lord of the Rings series spanning countless soldiers and gun tips all make people look very familiar in Troy. The advance and confrontation of tens of thousands of soldiers, the collision with each other, Qian Fan's battle over the vast blue sea, and the incredible long-range volley are all tricks that reflect the latest visual effects of Hollywood. It's just that Troy applied these techniques more skillfully and realistically. For example, in the collision scene of tens of thousands of soldiers, although no audience doesn't know that "soldiers" are mostly virtual, you have to admire others for not seeing flaws in the broad daylight environment in the film. Compared with similar scenes in The Lord of the Rings series, similar scenes in this film try to avoid dreaminess and strive for more details. The film skillfully focuses the camera more on the local people's battles, so as to set off the tragedy of the whole battlefield and highlight the heroic image of individual characters, killing two birds with one stone.
However, I still want to advise readers who are bent on watching the "big scene": the big scene of this movie will not let you down, but it is not particularly outstanding; It is better to look for some bright spots in small scenes than to appreciate big scenes with basically no new tricks. Personally, I think the character modeling and action design of this film are worth mentioning.
When it comes to Greece, many people will not necessarily think of Homer's epic, but they will definitely think of the Olympic Movement. When we think of the Olympic Games, we will immediately see a strong body and flawless movements, which show strength and beauty. It seems that the director of this film won three flavors, and deliberately used this film to arouse our yearning for the most primitive and eternal beauty. The three leading men in the film all have a lot of nude scenes, which makes me suspect that the director is deliberately trying to please the female audience. But such a strong and handsome figure, even if it is seen by male audiences, will feel quite eye-catching. Achilles, who is regarded as the "God of War", is the best person to interpret the beauty of power. Judging from the effect of the film, Brad Pitt's six-month sweat was not in vain. When his honey-colored body appeared on the screen, it was estimated that all the girls in the audience were lucky enough to faint. Although the concepts of sexy God and God of War are different, it highlights the characteristics of Achilles as an "idolized hero", which is in the same strain as the original spirit.
Such a sexy god is absolutely fatal, and that is the real "God of War" side of Achilles. In order to highlight his invincible martial arts, the film designed a set of unique movements and moves for Achilles. Some viewers may not be used to it, and think Achilles' movements are a bit too fancy. But I think it is very necessary to reflect the general combat capability endowed by Achilles. What's more, those movements are actually not fancy, which not only meets the actual needs, but also conforms to the original description. In particular, sliding, lifting feet, lunging, turning and other actions are very common skills in actual combat, but other roles are played too directly, which makes Achilles "fancy". And the mastery of the "skills" of the attack does not reflect the difference between Achilles and ordinary soldiers? Homer used "Shan Ying pounce" many times in the original work to describe the fighting ability of Achilles Superman. In the movie, we also saw Achilles use this kind of "eagle strike" many times, which means lightness, quickness and superior demeanor. In particular, the duel scene with Hecktor fully embodies the characteristics of Achilles' fast and powerful fighting, which can be called the most wonderful fighting in Hollywood movies this year.
three
If an epic has only stories and scenes, it is likely to fail. Epic must stand the test of history. The same is true of epic movies: the scenes and effects may be out of date, and what impresses the audience is often the flesh-and-blood characters and the characteristics that touch the hearts of the audience.
Achilles, the deified greatest warrior of mankind, really shines in the film: his bravery, his unruly, his gentleness, his anger and his sadness are all well displayed. As an idol in the original work, Blatter Peter's interpretation is still very impressive. Bodybuilding and skills in action language can be easily achieved through training, but Achilles' murderous look that scares the opponent on the battlefield is not easy to show through body language. Blatter Peter enhanced the appeal of action with sharp eyes and energetic momentum, and created a convincing image of "God of War". Compared with other actors' performances, Blatter Peter's interpretation always exudes aggressive sexy charm, which may be related to his own temperament. However, this temperament matches the original characters very well, and perhaps Achilles, the "heartthrob", should have done so.
Although Achilles was dazzling enough, what moved me most was Hecktor, the eternal Hecktor. Compared with passionate Achilles, calm hecklers are undoubtedly more mature. Hecktor's heart is filled with much broader and deeper love than his brother Paris, which makes him a model of the most perfect man and reflects his inevitable tragedy. Eric bana's interpretation is perfect, especially his big eyes. Although they don't discharge like Blatter Peter's, they always make people feel warm, reliable and courageous. Although his expression is not complicated, his deep eyes speak for themselves. In the process of watching, the audience don't have to imagine what the original characters are like, because Banna's performance and Hecktor's character are completely unified in essence, spirit and spirit. There is no need to describe his performance too much, and the audience's reaction can best explain the problem. The scene where Hecktor meets the end of his destiny is the climax of the whole movie. Only at that moment did I notice that the silence in the cinema was suffocating-all the audience were moved at the same time, and the feeling was really beautiful. Even if the whole movie doesn't have those grandiose visual effects and hearty fighting scenes, the image of Hecktor created by Banner alone is enough to make people like this movie. It is no exaggeration to say that if Achilles is the biggest selling point of the film, Hecktor is the soul of the film. Just as the success of Gladiator can't be separated from Russell Crowe, Troy would be a simple popcorn work without Banna's perfect Hecktor.
Compared with the first two, the role of Orlando Bloom, a popular handsome boy, is extremely thankless. In the original book, Prince Troy was a big vase and a "disaster" among men. Paris in the film seems to be more timid, naive and impulsive than the original. Performing such a role is a big challenge for Lando Bloom, who is very popular because of the radiant "Elf Archers" in The Lord of the Rings series. Personally, I am basically satisfied with his interpretation. No one liked his role from beginning to end, but he didn't show that kind of "pleasing" effect, so he could only be considered quite satisfactory.
As for the female characters in the film, because most of them are Facebook characters in the original work, none of them are particularly outstanding in the film. The film strengthens the emotional scene between Achilles and the priestess briseis, but it can only be regarded as a successful stunt, lacking the flavor of chewing. Hecktor's wife, andromache, has the same effect as the legendary stunning Helen. But the latter was also attacked because it failed to reach the "role" goal in the audience's mind. In fact, this is also an aspect that movies are more difficult to express than words: literature has unlimited imagination, and once movies appear, they solidify their images, and there will always be people who are dissatisfied.
In stark contrast to the pale performance of the actresses, the outstanding performance of those old actors truly reflects the value of "old play bones". Sean Benn, a British actor who has always been willing to be a green leaf, plays Odysseus with both wisdom and courage in the film, conveying the character's pursuit of perfection and strategizing at the same time. Agamemnon, the leader of the Spanish-Latin American Coalition played by Brian Cox, is as annoying as the original, but he is "evil" and has Cox's own characteristics, so he is better than Paris of Bloom. Peter O'Toole plays Priam, the king of Troy, with the most charm. Like Hecktor in Banna, it is also a performance that is completely integrated with the role. In the scene of secret negotiations with Achilles, Authour's interpretation of sadness reveals perseverance, and his plea implies initiative, which makes people feel that Achilles' exclamation that "you are much better than our king" is sincere.
Great actors can save a movie. Indeed, it is precisely because of the vivid and more humanized Priam, Hecktor and Achilles that Troy has truly touching power.
four
After watching Troy, I feel a little strange: the fate of the characters in the play can make you dumbfounded, and the performances of some actors can also make you applaud, but I don't feel particularly good about the film as a whole. There are still a few touching fragments that can reverberate in my mind, but I don't remember much about those big scenes. In other words, the audience's memory of many scenes is likely to be confused with other "epic" movies.
I can only blame the overall production of the film for being too stylized. Today, Hollywood has developed a particularly mature epic brewing process. This process makes the audience feel a little "aesthetic fatigue": although the pictures are getting more and more beautiful and the stories are getting smoother, they always feel that something is missing to make them crazy about love.
Judging from the script, a movie of more than two hours certainly cannot be equated with a long poem of more than 10,000 lines and 24 volumes, and the movie needs to be simplified. Letting Troy's story go off the altar is not only a powerful means to simplify the story, but also one of the greatest contributions of this film. At least from a personal point of view, it is more appealing to describe Achilles and Hecktor completely from a human perspective. They are no longer the chess pieces of the jealous wind and the god who strives for victory, but become people trapped in their own tragic fate. This tragic fate is determined by their own personality and historical conditions, and the film's description of their personality is very convincing. In this way, even if the audience substitutes the role, it will feel very real, and the final tragedy will be more meaningful. When the fate of characters is driven by their personalities, they also become their own chess pieces. What's more tragic than driving yourself to the wall and being helpless? So when actors combine themselves with these tragic characters well, their roles can be particularly touching.
However, it is obviously not enough to rely on the charm of stars. No matter how excellent the performance is, you can only remember the characters, but you can't feel the "unique" charm of the whole movie. Director Wolfgang Peterson is obviously a successful commercial film director, but it is because he is so familiar with the shooting routine of commercial films that he has "filmed" another work that can be used as a commercial film teaching material. Everything is just right. It has everything a "blockbuster" should have in the eyes of the audience, but it lacks the most important quality as a good film director: personality. Every shot of Troy not only makes the audience comfortable, but also gives up a bigger goal: to surprise the audience.
Indeed, Troy is a work with wonderful characters and satisfactory overall performance, but it can't be applauded loudly.
