In photographic terms, the black tone occupies a large area on the low-key photo screen, while the white tone occupies a small area, and the tone of the whole picture is mysterious.

According to the characteristics of the subject, the photographer consciously chooses a large area of black and a small area of white tone in black-and-white photography, and expresses the content and atmosphere of the work with strong tone contrast.

In order to make photos conform to real life, the tone of low-key photos must be determined according to the characteristics of the subject. For example, the close-ups of coal miners, the workers in front of the blazing steelmaking furnace, the people studying or working under the lights at night, and the old people at dusk can all be expressed in a low-key way, so that the emotions of the characters in the picture are serious, dignified, melancholy and mysterious, and they are more deeply portrayed.
