How to make ice lanterns

Ice lanterns are a unique folk art form in northern China. They originated in Heilongjiang Province and are an expression of ice sculpture art. The early ice lanterns were a winter lighting tool for farmers in the Songnen Plain and fishermen in the Songhua River Basin. Later, they gradually developed into an art form and gradually became popular in northern China. The annual Harbin Ice Lantern Garden Fair is a masterpiece of Chinese ice lantern art, attracting many tourists to come and watch it.

There are many ways to make ice lanterns. I will share the three methods I have made:

Method 1:

Clean the glass and pour an appropriate amount into it. of water, about two-thirds of the cup.

Add appropriate amount of table salt and stir evenly until the salt is completely dissolved. The purpose of this is to make the water transparent and increase the effect of the ice lamp.

Cut colored paper into various shapes, such as flowers, stars, etc.

The finished ice lantern can be placed indoors or outdoors, and candles can be lit inside to increase the brightness.

Method 2:

Use a laundry tub, washbasin, lunch box, or bucket at home as a mold and fill it with water.

Put the mold outside to freeze for a few hours. When the water near the walls of the basin and bucket freezes to a punch thick, pour out the remaining water inside.

Bring the basin and bucket into the house and place them upside down on the ground. It won’t take a while for the ice to separate from the container.

Move such ice covers outside the house, place them separately on the ground, or stack them one by one, then light candles inside, and the ice lantern is ready.

Method 3:

Prepare some materials: transparent glass bottles, water, salt, color film, and small LED light strings.

Wash the glass bottle, and then pour an appropriate amount of water, accounting for about two-thirds of the bottle.

Add appropriate amount of salt and stir evenly until the salt dissolves.

Cut the colored film into various shapes and then put it into the water.

Put small LED light strings in the bottle.

Seal the bottle and place the entire device in the freezer.

After freezing for a period of time, take out the ice lamp and display it indoors or outdoors.

The effects of ice lanterns produced by different methods will be different. You can choose the method that suits you according to personal preferences and actual conditions. At the same time, attention should also be paid to safety issues, especially when using open flames such as candles to prevent fire accidents.
