Shanghai Normal University is a key university in the city. Shanghai Normal University was founded in 1954 as Shanghai Normal College. In 1956, it was expanded into Shanghai First Normal College and Shanghai Second Normal College. In 1958, the two colleges merged to form Shanghai Normal University. From 1972 to 1978, it merged with East China Normal University and other five universities to form Shanghai Normal University. Shanghai Normal University was restored in 1978. In 1984, it was renamed Shanghai Normal University. In October 1994, it merged with Shanghai Technical Normal University to establish the new Shanghai Normal University.
