Historically, Kaifeng City was flooded by the Yellow River six times.

First, in the fourth year of the Yuan Dynasty (1344), the Yellow River burst the capital of song dynasty and Gong Xue was flooded. In the third year of Hongwu in Ming Dynasty (1370), it was renamed Kaifengfu Confucianism. In the twentieth year of Hongwu (1387) and the twenty-third year of Hongwu (1390), the official Confucianism flooded twice.

After the looting in Jin and Yuan Dynasties, Xian Tong, the largest city in the world, and Bianjing, the richest city in the world, began to decline, but it was the flood or man-made disaster that really brought Kaifeng down. At the end of the Ming Dynasty, the peasant rebels in Li Zicheng attacked Kaifeng, but they met with desperate resistance. In March, they failed to capture Kaifeng. Later, someone thought of opening the Yellow River and flooding Kaifeng.

Whether the dying loyal minister of the Ming Dynasty or the brutal Li Zicheng Rebel committed this crime is controversial in the history books. It is recorded that both sides are digging the Yellow River levee, but no matter who they are, they are unforgivable sinners. After the Yellow River burst, it was like a huge thunder rushing in, and the whole Kaifeng was flooded, only the gatehouse of the city wall and the roof of Suoguo Temple were faintly visible. After the flood,

Only 20,000-30,000 people escaped from Kaifeng City, which became not only a ruin, but also a hell on earth. Kaifeng City was buried several meters underground by yellow sand, and even the tall Maitreya Buddha in Suoguo Temple could only see its head and fingers, as if in silence for the victims. Nowadays, the octagonal glazed hall of Suoguo Temple is mostly buried underground, and later generations try to improve it.
