Oscar Awards History The first Academy Awards ceremony was held on Thursday, May 16, 1929, at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood to commemorate the great film achievements between 1927 and 1928. Hosted by actor Douglas Fairbanks and director William DeMille. Subsequent awards ceremonies in the 1930s and early 1940s were held at the Ambassador Hotel or the Biltmore Hotel. Next, the 1944-1946 awards ceremony was held at the Chinese Theater in Hollywood and the 1947-1948 award ceremony was held at the Temple Auditorium in Los Angeles. The 21st awards ceremony in 1949 was held at the Oscar Theater at the headquarters of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Melrose Avenue in Hollywood. From the 1950s to the 1960s, award ceremonies were held at the Pantages Theater in Hollywood. From 1961 to the following years, the location of the awards was moved from Los Angeles to the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in Santa Monica, California. It was not until 1969 that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences decided to move the awards ceremony back to Los Angeles, this time at the Los Angeles Music Center, and held the next 19 consecutive awards ceremonies here until 1988 when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences began to decide on the awards. The ceremony location alternates between the Music Center and the Temple Auditorium.
