Is the overhaul of Longmen Grottoes over in 2022?

Recently, the Longmen Grottoes, which everyone has been paying attention to, have been overhauled and completed. Longmen Grottoes is one of the three artistic treasures in China. We will meet you soon in a few days. Let's take a look at the specific details.

Is the overhaul of Longmen Grottoes over? The large-scale anti-seepage and dangerous rock mass reinforcement and protection project of Fengxian Temple in Longmen Grottoes has been completed. This is another large-scale protection project after 50 years after a series of reinforcement and maintenance projects of Fengxian Temple in the 1970s.

As a world cultural heritage and a national key cultural relic protection unit, this protection project of Longmen Grottoes is implemented in strict accordance with the plan approved by National Cultural Heritage Administration and Henan Provincial Cultural Relics Bureau. From June 5438 to February last year, scaffolding and green surgical gowns were set up around the giant Buddha in Lushena. According to Ma, director of the Protection Research Center of Longmen Grottoes Research Institute, the focus of this overhaul is mainly divided into two parts. The first is leakage treatment, that is, the west wall, south wall, north wall and surrounding areas of Fengxian Temple are treated according to geological conditions, crack distribution and the development degree of leakage diseases. The second is the reinforcement of dangerous rock mass, which takes reinforcement measures for the dangerous rock mass of Fengxian Temple wall and surrounding mountains to improve the stability of rock mass.

"Longmen Grottoes Research Institute organized multidisciplinary experts and scholars from China Cultural Relics Research Institute, Peking University, China Geo University, Zhejiang University and other units to participate in the treatment of Fengxian Temple, from survey and design to data collection to construction stage." Ma introduced that the staff took the measures of sealing and drainage, completed the sealing and grouting of micro-cracks at the top of Fengxian Temple, added 12 1 small drainage system, and repaired 1296 niche with fiber reinforced composite materials. In terms of reinforcement of dangerous rock mass, this project has reinforced 68 large-scale dangerous rock masses, bonded broken rock mass 1 107 square meters, installed passive protective net 120 meters and active protective net of 2970 square meters.

During the project, the staff also carried out archaeological surveying and mapping, text recording, high-definition photography, three-dimensional digitization and other work on Fengxian Temple. Gao Junping, director of the Information Center of Longmen Grottoes Research Institute, said: "We have combined the digitalization of grottoes with the protection business, and carried out the experimental restoration of grottoes such as the Diamond Sutra, the earliest stone carving in China, by using technologies such as multi-image photography, hand-held 3D scanner, joint arm scanner data acquisition and 3D printing.

At the same time of the "overhaul" of Fengxian Temple, Longmen Grottoes Research Institute also formed a research team in conjunction with many universities and research institutes to carry out detailed archaeological work on Fengxian Temple. In addition to the green, red and black pigments found on the body surface of the Lushena Buddha, the researchers also detected the presence of gold and silver elements on the face of the Lushena Buddha for the first time.

At the same time, it is also found for the first time that the eyes of the Samantabhadra Buddha statue on the right side of Lushena Buddha are made of glass. Through on-site X-ray fluorescence analysis, the white material preserved on the image surface is mainly lead white. Lead white not only provides a good interface for pigment adhesion and gold foil adhesion, but also plays a role in resisting natural weathering in the later stage.
