Photography is the art of light and shadow. Without light, there is no shadow, so we can find some hints through the nature of shadow.

Shadow edge judges light quality.

The stronger the edge of the shadow, the darker the light. On the contrary, it is softer.

It can be observed from the main body that from the highlight (point/line/surface) produced by light irradiation, each spot, light and glossy surface represent a lamp. So where there are highlights, there is light, and the level of light (main light, auxiliary light, contour light, background light and decorative light) can be judged by the position where the highlights fall on the subject.

Light source and shadow

Because light travels in a straight line in a unified medium, light sources, objects and shadows always stay in a straight line. One light source and one shadow, two light sources and two shadows. The number of shadows is directly related to the light source.

The relationship between the shadow size and the distance from the light source: the bigger the light source, the bigger the shadow.

The relationship between the height of shadow on the wall and the height of light source: the higher the light source, the lower the shadow.

The direction and size of the projection on the ground are related to the direction and height of the light source.

The relationship between the virtual reality of shadow and the nature of light source;

Direct light (strong light) has a solid shadow and a clear boundary between light and shade (above).

Scattered light has a virtual shadow without sharp edges.

The relationship between the virtual reality of shadow and the distance from the object to the light source;

When the distance from the object to the shadow is constant, the greater the distance, the more real the shadow is, and the smaller the distance, the more virtual the shadow is.

The relationship between the virtual reality of the shadow and the distance from the object to the shadow when the distance from the object to the light source is constant;

The smaller the distance, the more solid the shadow is, and the greater the distance, the more virtual the shadow is.
