Introduction

At the last moment of World War II, in the ruins of Villa San Girolamo in the mountains north of Florence, Italy, lay a burnt man who had been transported from North Africa. The mysterious man known as the "English Patient" was rescued from a burning plane by Bedouin shepherds. No one knows his true identity. Hana is a Canadian female nurse who lost her lover, father and unborn child during the war.

The war was over, and when large numbers of British troops withdrew, the two refused to return to the hospital in Pisa with the others, leaving Hana to stay and care for him. This mysterious wounded person became her spiritual sustenance. Also staying with them was Caravaggio, the Indian Sikh engineer Kip. Under Caravaggio's constant temptation, the "English Patient" gradually revealed his true identity. He was an Austrian named Olmasi.

In the 1930s, we had been studying and exploring the North African desert to find the Zezula Oasis. Once, a young British nobleman named Geoffrey Clifton flew to Cairo with his new wife Catherine to join the ranks of desert exploration. Within a month, Almasy became her lover. In retaliation for Almasy, Catherine's husband planned a suicide flight to kill all three of them.

Catherine's husband dies, Almasi and Catherine survive, and Almasi travels across the desert to find help. At this time, the war broke out and he was arrested by the British army. In order to be able to return to Catherine's hiding place, Almasy became a guide for German spies. Three years later, he returned to Catherine's hiding cave, took Catherine's body, and flew out of the desert in a plane. The plane was in disrepair, exploded in the air, and Almasy fell to the ground as a burning man. The atomic bomb broke their villa life, and eventually they parted ways.
