Life is like an adventure without a clue, so we often envy those who wander in the same place and concentrate on the same thing. When tortured by impermanent fate, refusing to change can sometimes provide people with a sense of security. So "The Legend of 1900" gave us a lot of expectations from the beginning. An orphan who was abandoned on a giant ferry suddenly became a talented pianist. He has never disembarked in his life. The sea, the ship, two thousand passengers coming and going and his piano constitute his only world. This film based on Italian writer Alessandro Barricau's monologue novel could have been a very rich and interesting fable, whether it was used to express innocence and inspiration in the vicissitudes of the world, or brave and confident immigrants full of dreams, or the power that music gives people, or a little outdated heroism ... However, this film wants to tell us too much, but the result seems to be nothing clear.

Kisby tornado once directed the touching film Paradise. Like many European directors, he didn't want a large number of American audiences to understand his films through subtitles, so he made the British film 1900 Legend. The film is dotted with many elements of Hollywood flavor: the luxurious Titanic on the sea, cobblestone streets with gas lights on, immigrants who cheered when they saw the Statue of Liberty, and of course, love and jazz that passed by. It's just these seemingly clever tricks and not very clever narratives that make The Legend of 1900 no longer look like a sad and romantic Italian movie. The affectation, bookishness and clumsy translation are badly permeated in the whole movie.

In the film, you can often see such a scene: well-dressed characters stand on the deck and look out at the sea, giving a grandiose speech about free life and the true meaning of life, which looks like the Titanic version of Shakespeare's plays. There are two excellent actors in the film: melancholy, Lian Xiao sounds like a confessed Tim Rove and a fat man who is good at eye movement, pritt Taylor Vince, but these two actors who are full of gas are like two marionettes in this film. It's entirely the director's fault. He catastrophically kept the protagonists expressing their inner feelings in those cheap conversations. There is no doubt that Tim Rove is a good actor, but it's a pity that he met a director who is determined to destroy those delicate feelings.

Ennio morricone's soundtrack became the only highlight worthy of attention, but unfortunately, even this only highlight was regarded as a fake made in haunters by Kisby tornado. 1900 and the arrogant jazz pianist Jelly Roll Morton (played by Clarence Williams III) playing the piano on the boat should be one of the highlights of the whole movie, but it seems that the contrast between them is not so much the expressive force of music as the faster and louder players. After digital editing, Tim Rove's hand movements seem to have six hands flying over the keys. A contest between piano skills and scheming has turned into a fantastic "martial arts duel", which makes people feel a little funny.

When watching movies, we may vaguely feel something: the music of 1900 is inseparable from the values he has always maintained in his heart, and he plays the piano to a large extent in order not to leave the isolated world in his heart. But this movie didn't confirm our inner expectations. We don't know what this man is thinking. Is he a hero or a madman? The trumpet performance at the end of the film seems to recall something. Yes, maybe I really remembered something, but why? (Zhang Fan)
