This set of works, shot by Italian photographer Giovanni Troilo, aims to show the unemployment and crime situation in the Belgian town of Charleroi. Troilo's works have caused great controversy since Jose announced the winners' list on February 12, 2002.
Jose official website issued a statement saying that there was a photo of a painter painting directly on a human body. When Troilo submitted his work, he claimed that it was shot in the town of Charleroi, but it has been confirmed that it was shot in Brussels, 50 kilometers away. Troilo himself has admitted this by email and telephone, so Jose decided to disqualify this group of photos.
Another photo shows a fat man topless. The person in the photo generated by the author lives in the most dangerous area of Charleroi, but the other person is really a celebrity in this city and runs a bar business.
In a letter to the Dutch organizer, the city of Charleroi accused the withered industrial zone, sick residents and dangerous blocks in the photo of distorting the facts and slandering the image of the city and local people. Jose has responded that there is no evidence that this group of photos violates the ethics of news photography.
After discovering that the actual shooting location did not match the picture description, the person in charge of Jose pointed out: "The World Press Photo Contest is based on the trust in the photographer's professional ethics. Now, the evidence shows that this group of photos did violate the rules. "
According to the rules of the Netherlands, after Troilo's works are disqualified, the first prize of the group photo of contemporary hot topics will be awarded to the previous second prize, which will be awarded to the previous third prize, and the third prize will be vacant.
