What is color reproduction?

Color reproduction refers to shooting and developing color film, and the color of color photographic pictures is generally consistent with the color of the original scene. It is the goal pursued by early color film photography. The factors that affect color reproduction are the performance of film, the quality of photographic lens, the color temperature of light, the conditions of development and printing, and the number of printing light. If the color of the work is close to the original, its true and natural effect will give people a sense of comfort, which is called accurate color reproduction in photography. When people talk about "good color reproduction", they often talk about the grasp, control and correction of color, which brings people a strong sense of mystery and temptation and makes people enjoy it. "Color reproduction" is not absolutely accurate. It's just relative. Everything is compared with the color concept in the photographer's mind. This color concept is the accumulation of color perception by photographers in their long-term photography practice, and it is also a kind of awareness accumulation of color discrimination.

Although photographers have a common understanding of some excellent films and will resonate, they often have great differences in identifying the details of their works because of their different levels, personalities and photographic experience. The concept of color in the photographer's mind is not accurately quantified. There must always be a reference for the subtle contrast in practice. Proofing in normal printing and amplification is the reference. Therefore, color contrast is relative. With the development of modern science and technology, digital colors have become very rich. Commonly used is 8-bit color. Encode each color of RGB to the 8th power, and you will get 256 colors with different gray levels. If you superimpose different gray levels of RGB primary colors, you will get 2 to the 24th power, which is equal to 167772 16 colors, but it can only be adjusted between 0 and 255 gray levels. This is its limit.
