The film is full of lyrical poetry, with the scene as the style and integrated with the scene. Director Xie Tieli served as the chairman of the Chinese Film Association, and also directed dozens of films such as Unknown Island, Storm and Overtaking Tiger Mountain. He experienced the whole development process of new China movies. Due to the war, the director who has been in the cinema for more than 40 years has only a fifth-grade education. Xie Lao clearly remembers that the first time he saw a movie was that of Yin Xiucen and Langen Han, who were called "Laura and Hatay" by China people. Although I haven't experienced the revolutionary era of the protagonist's life, this character has the shadow of my eldest brother, so Qiu Jian Jr.' s thoughts and feelings can move me very much. I can also feel the image of Lan Tao in the novel from a distant relative of mine. There is another reason for choosing this novel, that is, the customs of the water towns in the south of the Yangtze River often remind me of my hometown Huaiyin and many childhood days, so I have a strong desire to make this film. It is no longer "low" early spring. For furong town in the film, Xiao is obviously an alien "uninvited guest". He wanted to avoid the current of the times and society and come to furong town. He is tired of the noisy and changeable world outside. He is like a homesick wanderer, hoping to find a paradise as safe as home in furong town. But he found that entering the "Xanadu" is actually entering the whirlpool of right and wrong. Some people say that early spring in February looks a bit like spring in a small town. But, after all, times are different. In the film, I intentionally weakened the negative and gloomy elements in the original work and added positive and bright colors. At the end of the film, George W. Qiu Jian "escaped" from furong town in order to get rid of contradictions, which is regarded as the present ending: he lost his unrealistic fantasy of escaping from reality and rejoined the torrent of society. In addition, I added Wang Fusheng, a poor student, to the film, taking his relationship with George W. Qiu Jian as another line. After Wensao committed suicide, Wang Fusheng dropped out of school because of poverty. This double blow pushed the pain to the extreme and prompted him to wake up. At this point, I also hope that the film can give the audience a positive feeling and herald a bright future. You can feel that it should be the early spring of "fright", which makes people awake. Xia Yan, then Vice Minister of Culture, put a lot of energy into this film, which was criticized as too bourgeois.
