As a travel photographer, Su Xue seldom takes a camera bag and wears outdoor clothes such as a jacket. The camera is carried around or put in a handbag, wearing ordinary clothes and slippers. In Chitwan, Nepal, many photographers feel that nothing special can be photographed there, mainly elephants, forests and one-horned rhinos. However, Su Xue filmed many different movies here, such as a Talu child reading under a kerosene lamp, which truly recorded their life scenes.

Everyone in Solaha knows Su Xue, and he is welcomed by the local people every time he goes there. He can go in and out of any Nepalese family at will and observe their lives closely, including washing his face, washing clothes, cooking and chatting. Su Xue believes that a good photographic work should be scarce, which comes from the depth and breadth of the theme. As a result of photographing Nepal's customs all the year round, Su Xue got to know many domestic and Nepalese scholars and officials. On March 20 12, Su Xue contacted local clergy through Nepalese archaeologists, and got several close-up shots of the living goddess Patan. Before that, only one German and one French photographer had filmed it. Su Xue entered the Living Goddess Temple three times in a week and photographed the life, study and religious activities of the Living Goddess at close range.

Many small places in Nepal also involve Soviet studies. He said that although Nepal has a small land area, its transportation is inconvenient, and many places with great cultural value are unknown to outsiders. For example, Kathmandu Valley is littered with many temples unknown to the outside world. Before that, many people always thought that there was no railway in Nepal. Beijing News: Many people go to Nepal as an extension of their trip to Tibet. Why do you have a soft spot for Nepal?

Su Xue: In 2008, I went to Nepal for the first time, and it was also my first time to go abroad. Before that, I was a money lover. How can I have time to go abroad? But when I arrived in Nepal, I found that people in this country had a high happiness index. They are not rich, but they live happily. Happiness has little to do with money. The natural scenery, religion and world cultural heritage of this country are very distinctive. In Kathmandu, there are seven world cultural heritages within dozens of kilometers of Fiona Fang, Fiona Fang, and there is no wall, where the local people live, die and die, giving people the feeling of a living museum.

Beijing News: Why do you prefer humanistic photography?

Su Xue: When I first went to Kathmandu in 2008, it was still a traditional city, unchanged by business, and kept its own cultural characteristics well. But now, there are many shops, ATMs and KFC on the streets of Kathmandu. It's only been five years, so what will happen in another five years? Maybe in a few years, they will also invite people out of the temple and build a wall to turn this place into the second Forbidden City. Many cultural relics are irreversible. If they disappear, they will disappear. I hope I can shoot more and record more.

Su Xue: A good photographic work captures the typical expressions of typical people in a typical environment. If you don't understand the local culture, you can't capture this typicality, and sometimes you will make jokes. I once saw a work with a Buddha statue as the background. At first glance, it is very emotional, but anyone who knows a little about religion will know that a real Buddhist will never face the Buddha statue.

I once searched all the books related to Nepal in Wangfujing Bookstore, and bought all the books except those that were definitely irrelevant, just to know what was not in the Raiders Book. When I was writing the book "The Story of Kathmandu", Nepalese officials provided a lot of original materials written in the local language, which could help me understand the country well.

Beijing News: Is photographic equipment important to a photographer?

Su Xue: I don't think it's particularly important. I once put some photos I took with a card machine in Nepal on the Internet. Many people see the photo data on the website and say, why do you use such low-end equipment? Without these data, what would they think? The difference between mid-range cameras and high-end cameras may be at the limit, and there are other basic elements. A good photo is not because of the camera, but because of the person who uses it. Travel photography is a process of discovery.
