1990 graduated from the Fine Arts Department of Nanjing Normal University, majoring in photography. Shi Yu 1996 began to focus on pinhole photography, and now he has become the most famous pinhole photographer in China. Pinhole photography of stone is like doing a project. For example, in 2002, he used a beacon tower of the Great Wall to photograph the Great Wall in a black box. Pinhole photography can only be implemented after on-site investigation, design shooting scheme in advance and solve technical problems, and on-site exposure often takes several hours. Because the camera is directly sensitive to photographic paper and depends on natural light, every pinhole photography is unique. Many of Shi's photographic works are historical and cultural heritage. He used pinhole photography, an ancient photographic imaging technology, to give these great cultural relics more charming symbolic significance. The irreplaceability of pinhole photography makes Shi's works become one of the pioneers in exploring the ultimate value of photography art in contemporary China.
