The history and culture of Mount Tai

Mount Tai has a strong mythological background. In ancient times, people thought that the sunrise was in the East, so the East was the origin of everything. Mount Tai is the highest mountain in the East, so in ancient times when technology was backward and ideas were closed, people thought that Mount Tai could reach the sky and be grounded.

As long as you climb Mount Tai, you can talk to God and accept God's will. Qin Shihuang believed that he was the son of destiny and was recognized by God. Only he was qualified to accept God's will. Therefore, Mount Tai was chosen by Qin Shihuang as a place of meditation.

Secondly, the emperors of various dynasties regarded Mount Tai as a sacred place and held many sacrificial activities, such as offering sacrifices to heaven and ancestors, but few people could really worship Mount Tai. Influenced by feudal thought, ancient people had a strong sense of hierarchy and believed in the theory of ghosts and gods. Even if the natural conditions of Mount Tai are bad, they will go up the mountain to worship Zen.

Besides, only six emperors of Qin Shihuang went to Mount Tai to meditate. Not that other emperors don't want to go. On the contrary, they regard it as an honor to meditate in Mount Tai. However, meditation in Mount Tai requires the emperor to have certain achievements, and it is auspicious, that is, he can meditate in Mount Tai, talk to God, report his achievements to God, and accept God's will.

There is a very interesting thing about Guan Chan. As the first emperor to go to Mount Tai for amenorrhea, Qin Shihuang went to the top of Mount Tai for amenorrhea and led his entourage to climb halfway up the mountain when it rained heavily.

This was thought by people at that time that Qin Shihuang had killed too many people, and the rule of law was harsh, which annoyed God and could not be recognized by God. However, Qin Shihuang was still opinionated and led everyone to meditate on Mount Tai. Perhaps it was really Qin Shihuang's move that completely angered God and led to the demise of Qin Ershi.

The later emperors were more reliable. The second is Emperor Wu of the Western Han Dynasty, who went up the mountain to worship Zen with real evidence. He was a soldier all his life and refused the Xiongnu in the north. He started the glorious period of the Western Han Dynasty, so he was recognized by heaven and was able to worship Zen in the mountains.

The third is Emperor Guangwu of the Eastern Han Dynasty. He went through troubled times to unify China, but the purpose of his meditation was not pure. According to legend, his meditation is to consolidate Liu's royal status and want to be a "noble family".

The fourth is Tang Gaozong. He did a unique thing. He took Wu Zetian to worship Zen. Moreover, in order to show the strength of national strength, the motorcade has been driving for hundreds of miles continuously, accompanied by envoys from other countries. The fifth emperor was Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty, which was the only dynasty in which two emperors went to meditate on Mount Tai, and the last one was Song Zhenzong.

As we all know, the Song Zhenzong period was not peaceful. He has never achieved anything. It can be said that Wen can't recite poems against others, and he can't mount a horse with a gun. Moreover, he did something that humiliated the country. Make an alliance with Liao, cede thirty-six states of Youyun and pay tribute every year.

It stands to reason that such an emperor is not qualified to worship Zen, but he went to Mount Tai to worship Zen and faked the auspicious events of heaven. According to the speculation of later generations, in the war against Liao, he failed the civil servants and generals and the people, so he wanted to consolidate his position by closing the door to Zen.

He wanted to show that he was "the only thrill" through this move, but later we also knew that it didn't save him or the Song Dynasty. Strangely, after the Song Dynasty, no emperor ever went to Mount Tai to meditate, but mostly went to sacrifice, which may be related to the fact that the later generation of the Song Dynasty was not the next generation.

So many emperors held meditation and sacrifices in Mount Tai, leaving a profound cultural heritage for Mount Tai. As a small series of meditation ceremony at the foot of Mount Tai, I have seen it many times, and the scenery is quite eye-catching, such as sunrise, sea of clouds and sunset.

Countless temples, Taoist temples and stone carvings on Mount Tai are also worth visiting, because they have become the epitome of China culture under the historical accumulation. Moreover, the idea of "harmony between man and nature" represented by Mount Tai has gradually become the spiritual sustenance of China people and one of the treasures of Chinese national ideology and culture. Bian Xiao hopes that everyone will come to Taishan to enjoy the beauty of the sea of clouds and the ancient charm of Zen.
