What are the different shooting styles of Demachy and Evans?
De Marche is a French banker, amateur painter and photographer. At the same time, he is also a major member of the Paris Photography Club. Demachy has a soft spot for gum development. All the photos he exhibited were processed in some way, and those "unnecessary and boring" things were removed. They don't look like traditional photos at all, but more like lithography based on photography.
Demachy once explained why he did it. He believes that works of art must be a portrayal of nature, not a copy of nature. The beauty of nature itself cannot be a work of art, and a work of art can only be completed by an artist through his own creation. Mechanical reproduction of nature cannot be called art.
Evans became a member shortly after the establishment of the association, but he thought that photo photography could take a more "real" way. Evans is a bookseller and amateur photographer in London. Later, I was engaged in professional photography. Most of his subjects are portraits and architectural close-ups, all of which were shot for Country Life magazine.
In Evans' eyes, the best subjects are the corridors with columns and the central square of the church, because there is a moving world between darkness and light, which implies rhythm and order. His masterpiece "The Ocean of Steps" was shot in the reading room of 1903 Welsh Cathedral. Like all his church photos, this photo "leads people from one place to another" through the endless repetition of shadows, showing a calm and thoughtful rhythm and reflecting Evans' strong subjective feelings. He later recalled:
At that time, I got a great negative. The steps on the right side of the picture show a beautiful curve, just like rolling waves, which gradually recede in depth and become a small wave on the upper left of the picture. This is an exciting combination of lines. I was lucky enough to seize the opportunity and take this unusual photo of the steps.
Evans believes that photography is best done in the viewfinder of a camera, not in a darkroom like a chewing gum photographer. Observation is very important for photographic creation. It is necessary to carefully observe the tone changes formed by different shooting points, different lighting directions at different times or different climatic conditions. When filming Ocean on the Steps, he observed the church for several hours before deciding which part to shoot. Then he went back and forth to observe the light and shadow effects formed at different times. All this was done in the process of shooting. After all this, the photos are printed directly on photographic paper, and they are not cut or processed.
