The history of Xiangnan College can be traced back to the Third Women’s Normal School of Hunan Province founded in 1912; in 2003, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, it was established by the former Chenzhou Normal College, Chenzhou Medical College, and Chenzhou Education The college and Chenzhou Normal School were merged into a full-time general undergraduate university and renamed "Xiannan College".

In 2013, the school successfully passed the undergraduate teaching qualification evaluation by the Ministry of Education. In November 2017, the school was newly added as a project construction unit (third batch) for master's degree awarding units in Hunan Province.

As of May 2021, the school has two campuses, Wangxian and Beihu, covering an area of ??1,713.1 acres and a total construction area of ??752,200 square meters; it has 19 teaching units and 50 undergraduate majors.
