In 1956, at a time when the young Communist Party of China was carrying out large-scale industrialization, the Ministry of Heavy Industry established the Guilin Geology School in Guangxi to meet the needs of the country's construction and to cultivate urgently needed geological and mining professional and technical talents. In March 2009, the school was officially renamed Guilin University of Technology.

For more than half a century, the school has undergone five changes of ownership and ten changes of school name. It has always adhered to the direction of socialist school running, taking talent training and scientific research as its own responsibility, and has trained more than 100,000 students for the country. All kinds of senior professional technical and management talents. The students we train are highly praised by the society for their solid professional foundation and strong work practical ability. The school covers an area of ??more than 1,700 acres and has three campuses: Pingfeng, Yanshan and Nanning. There are currently 17 secondary colleges. There are 59 undergraduate majors and more than 26,000 full-time students of various types. It is a multi-disciplinary institution of higher learning with a focus on engineering and coordinated development of seven disciplines: science, management, liberal arts, economics, law, and agriculture.

The school obtained the right to grant master’s degrees in 1986. At present, there are 4 first-level discipline master's degree authorization points and 35 second-level discipline master's degree authorization points. There are 3 professional degree categories: engineering master's degree, MBA master's degree, and tourism management master's degree. Among them, 11 engineering master's degree professional fields have been obtained. Obtained MBA authorization qualification. Six disciplines, including geological resources and geological engineering, materials science, environmental engineering, applied chemistry, detection technology and automation equipment, and business management, are listed in the construction of doctoral degree authorization sites. There are now more than 1,400 graduate students in the school. In 2010, the school successfully obtained the qualification of recommending outstanding fresh undergraduate graduates to study for master's degree without taking the exam, becoming the fifth university in Guangxi to obtain the qualification of "recommended exemption". The established and well-managed postgraduate education system has become an important symbol of the school's educational strength and level.
