Guilin has a long history. Judging from the relics found in Baojiyan and Zhupiyan caves in urban areas, human ancestors lived in Guilin about 10,000 years ago. During the Xia, Shang and Zhou Dynasties, Guilin was the residence of Baiyue people. In 2 14 BC, after Qin Shihuang dug a canal to connect Hunan and Lijiang River, Guilin became an important town with the sea in the south and the Central Plains in the north.

The name of "Guilin" began in the Qin Dynasty, and Qin Shihuang set up Guilin, Xiang and Nanhai counties. Guilin county is famous for its rich jade laurel, which is the earliest origin of its name, but the county governance is not in Guilin today.
