Origin of the name

There are two Maoshan mountains in Jiangsu Province. One is south of the Yangtze River and is called Nan Maoshan; the other is in Xinghua City on the north bank of the Yangtze River and is called Beimaoshan.

In the Han Dynasty, in Xianyang, Shaanxi Province, three brothers of the Mao family lived in seclusion here, so they built the Sanmao Taoist Temple and called them Sanmao Zhenren, so the mountain was called Sanmao Mountain. After that, Juqu Mountain was renamed Nanmaoshan, and Sanmaoshan in Jiangbei was renamed Beimaoshan, or Maoshan for short.

During the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, Ren Dachun, a representative of the Yangzhou School who was famous for his textual research, said in "The Stele of Passing Maoshan": North Maoshan was the place where Sanmao Zhenjun first practiced Taoism. This means that during the reign of Emperor Jing of the Western Han Dynasty, brothers Mao Ying, Mao Gu, and Mao Zhong first practiced Taoism and saved the people in Beimaoshan, so it was called Maoshan. Later, they were invited to go to Juqu Mountain in the south of the Yangtze River, and this was how they were divided into southern and northern Maoshan.
