According to the agreement between the two countries, diplomats, officials and business people holding ordinary passports of China people and foreign countries can enter the country visa-free, but they can only visit the DPRK at the invitation of the reception unit of the DPRK. Ordinary passport holders in People's Republic of China (PRC) and the People's Republic of China must complete their visas outside North Korea before they can enter the country. The agency that handles visas outside the DPRK is the diplomatic and consular representative office of the DPRK abroad.

The validity period of an entry visa to the DPRK is generally 6 months, counting from the date of issuance, and the duration of stay is counted from the date of entry into the DPRK. However, according to the relevant provisions of the DPRK visa, it is necessary to enter and leave the country within the validity period of the visa, that is, the time spent in the DPRK is included in the validity period of the visa and must not exceed the validity period of the visa. Foreigners who have lived for a long time (more than 6 months) shall go through the relevant formalities and apply for a foreigner's residence permit within 7 days from the date of residence registration.
