Yungang Grottoes are located at the south foot of Wuzhou Mountain and the north bank of Wuzhou River, about 16 km west of Datong City, Shanxi Province. The grottoes are excavated along the mountain, extending from east to west for about 1 km. With 45 main caves, 252 niches and more than 565,438+0,000 stone statues, it is one of the largest ancient caves in China.
The grottoes are dug in the mountains, which are large in scale and magnificent in momentum, and extend about 1 km from east to west. Grottoes are divided into east, middle and west areas from east to west according to natural mountains. There are 45 main caves and 209 auxiliary caves, and the carving area exceeds 18000 square meters. The tallest statue is 17m, and the smallest is 2cm, with about 1 100 niches and more than 59,000 statues.
Yungang Grottoes have a history of 1500 years. It is the first treasure house of Buddhist art carved by a nation in a dynasty after Buddhist art was introduced into China. It is a historical monument to the integration of Chinese and western cultures in the 5th century.
