(2) Participate in the International Exhibition Bureau
Since my country participated in the World Expo for the first time in 1982, it has established ties with the Bureau International des Expositions. The Bureau International des Expositions twice invited representatives of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade to attend the General Assembly of Member States in 1990. On May 3, 1993, the Bureau International des Expositions passed a resolution to admit China as its 46th member state, and Liu Fugui, Vice President of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, served as the chief representative of China of the Bureau International des Expositions. On December 5 of the same year, at the 114th Member Congress of the Bureau of International Exhibitions in Paris, China was co-opted as a member of the Information Committee of the Bureau of International Exhibitions. On December 8, 1999, at the 126th meeting of the International Exhibition Bureau held in France, our country was elected as a member of the Executive Committee for the first time.
(3) Hosting the 1999 Horticultural Expo
After my country joined the International Exhibition Bureau, it has the primary conditions to apply for the World Expo. On November 3, 1994, the International Exhibition Bureau agreed that China would host the World Horticultural Exposition in 1999.
The 1999 World Horticultural Exposition was originally scheduled to be held in Beijing. Due to various reasons, with the approval of the State Council, it was decided to move the World Expo to Kunming, Yunnan. The China ’99 Kunming World Horticultural Expo Organizing Committee was established on December 20, 1996. Li Lanqing, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Vice Premier of the State Council, served as the director of the organizing committee.
The 1999 Kunming World Horticultural Exposition was a huge success.
Its significance is as President Jiang pointed out at the opening ceremony of the Kunming World Expo: "The successful hosting of this World Expo has strengthened the aspirations of the Chinese people, fully demonstrated the cohesion, creativity and great spirit of the Chinese nation, and demonstrated our socialist country's The advantage of being able to concentrate on big things shows the high organizational and management capabilities of our socialist country."
This World Expo has had very good social and economic effects on Yunnan.
First, it expands Yunnan’s popularity. Through the application and publicity of the World Expo, as well as the participation of various countries in the exhibition and the visits of tourists, the whole country and even the world have further known and understood Yunnan, which has a huge role in promoting Yunnan's reform and opening up and attracting investment and foreign investment from all over the country.
Second, it promotes the rapid development of infrastructure and urban construction. In preparation for the World Expo, Yunnan has invested a large amount of money in the province's infrastructure construction such as airports and highways, environmental management, and the transformation of Kunming's urban area. It can be said that the World Expo made Yunnan's infrastructure construction ten years ahead of schedule.
Third, drive the further development and growth of the tourism industry. Since Yunnan itself is rich in tourism resources, tourists who come to visit the World Expo usually visit places such as Shilin, Dali, Lijiang, Zhongdian (Shangri-La) and Xishuangbanna. Therefore, the purpose of "setting up a stage for the World Expo and singing opera for tourism" has been achieved.
