Pepsi in China
● Total investment: PepsiCo and its partners have invested more than US$1 billion in China since 1981.
● All organizations: PepsiCo has more than 40 joint ventures or wholly-owned enterprises in China.
● Number of employees: PepsiCo and Frito-Lay directly employ nearly 10,000 Chinese employees. Provide indirect employment opportunities, including service personnel, suppliers and dealers, estimated to be more than 150,000.
● Beverages: It has 20 bottling plants and 1 wholly-owned concentrate plant in 20 cities. Flagship brands include PepsiCo, 7-up, Mirinda, Diet Pepsi, Pepsi Lime and Mountain Dew carbonated beverage series, Tropicana, Dole juice series, Gatorade and Lipton ready-to-drink tea, etc.
● Food: 4 small food factories. Flagship products include Cheetos tortilla chips, Lay's potato chips and breakfast cereal Quaker.
● Agricultural Technology: PepsiCo and the Ministry of Agriculture of China have jointly developed a $20 million comprehensive agricultural technology project to introduce seed cultivation technology and farming practices. Potato production has more than doubled in three years, benefiting 1,100 agricultural families.
● Fast food partners: Pepsi brought Pizza Hut and KFC fast food chains to China in 1987. Today, that business belongs to Yum Brands International, and they remain an important customer of PepsiCo.
Currently, Pepsi-Cola products are produced in twelve joint venture bottling plants in China, including Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Fuzhou, Beijing, Shanghai, Nanchang, Guilin, Chongqing and Changchun. In addition, it has two concentrate production plants in Guangzhou: one is responsible for producing Pepsi drinks, while the other is responsible for producing local brands.
Wuhan Pepsi-Cola Beverage Co., Ltd. is a Sino-foreign joint venture established by Shanghai Pepsi-Cola Beverage Co., Ltd. and Hong Kong Guanyu Investment Co., Ltd. The company started construction of the factory in January 1996 and was officially completed and put into production in October of the same year.
Currently, customers can purchase Pepsi-Cola, 7-Up, Mirinda and Mountain Dew in China at any time. Pepsi products all use packaging designs of different forms and sizes, including the traditional 355ml cans of Pepsi soda and the 250ml paper packaging of other juice drinks.
Since PepsiCo and the China National Light Industry Federation signed a memorandum of cooperation and development, the company has invested US$700 million in similar domestic projects.
PepsiCo has further developed its China business through the cooperation of local governments. In the past few years, PepsiCo has established a number of joint ventures in China. In late 1993, PepsiCo established Pepsi Asia Beverages Co., Ltd. in Guangzhou and Sichuan Pepsi-Cola Beverages Co., Ltd. in Chengdu, Sichuan. In 1994, Pepsi established four new joint ventures, including Pepsi Tianfu Beverage Co., Ltd. in Chongqing, Changchun Pepsi-Cola Beverage Co., Ltd. in Changchun, Jilin, Beijing Pepsi Beibingyang Beverage Co., Ltd. and Shanghai Pepsi-Cola Beverage Co., Ltd.
In addition to owning 12 joint venture bottling plants and three concentrate production plants, Pepsi-Cola International Group also plans to set up nine new plants in China in the next five years. Together with local partners, the company Advanced technology and equipment will be transferred to the existing factory; modern management and market systems will also be introduced. The new plant will produce Pepsi's flagship beverages, including Pepsi, 7-up, Mirinda, Mountain Dew and other carbonated and non-carbonated beverages.
Pepsi's achievements in aggressive expansion are very obvious. In 1994 alone, the company's sales in China increased by 50%.
The corporate brand ranked 24th in the 2006 "Top 500 World Brands" list compiled by World Brand Lab. The company ranked 184th in the 2007 Fortune ranking of the world's 500 largest companies.
