the southernmost city in the world, the capital and administrative center of Tierra del Fuego (Tierra del Fuego province, Argentina). It is located at 54 47 ′ S and 68 2 ′ W, on the ushuaia Bay on the north bank of beagle channel. The population is about 64 thousand (21). Founded in 187, the city was established in 1893. The main economic sectors are electrical appliances, wood processing, fisheries and tourism. Residents are mostly engaged in logging, raising sheep and fishing. However, due to its unique geographical location, it has become the gateway to Antarctica and is well-known in the world. Ushuaia is 32 kilometers away from Buenos Aires, its capital, but only 8 kilometers away from Antarctica. It takes at least a week to sail from Australia, New Zealand and other places to Antarctica. It takes two days to sail from ushuaia and cross the Drake Strait. Therefore, ushuaia is an ideal starting and supply base for exploring and inspecting Antarctica. It is the southernmost settlement in the world.
