Dubai is a famous global commercial metropolis in the Middle East. Because it is located in the throat of communication between East and West, it is often the center of economic activities in Europe and Asia. Today, Dubai is not only the gateway to the Persian Gulf, but also an important gateway to South Africa, India, Central Asia and Eastern European countries. In order to make better use of its unique geographical advantages, Dubai municipal government has vigorously promoted infrastructure construction related to transportation since 1970s, among which port development and airport construction are the most important infrastructure projects. 1970, Rashid port in Dubai officially put into operation. From 65438 to 0979, the world's largest artificial port, Jebel Ali Port, was put into use. After nearly 20 years' efforts, Dubai has not only become the largest port in the Persian Gulf region, but also occupies a pivotal position in the world port shipping industry.

1991may, Dubai established a professional port management organization-Dubai port authority (DPA) to implement unified management of Rashid port in the center of Dubai and Jebel Ali port 35 kilometers away. Since then, Dubai Port Authority has played a locomotive role in Dubai's economic activities, and Dubai Port has also entered an orderly and standardized development path. From 65438 to 0999, the container throughput in Dubai reached 3 million TEUs, a record high. In the same year, about 10200 ships docked at two ports in Dubai, of which 4000 were container ships. Currently, there are about 125 shipping companies passing through Dubai. It can be seen that Dubai has become one of the world's major ports and the world's leading transit trade port.

Dubai Port Authority attaches great importance to the improvement of various port facilities and equipment, especially the continuous purchase of cargo handling machinery and equipment at container terminals. At present, Dubai Port Authority has two ports with berths 102, including Panama-type bridge cranes 15, ultra-Panama-type bridge cranes 8, tire container gantry cranes 34, straddle carriers 27, cranes 19 1 5, and cranes over 5 tons 26. Both Rashid Port and Jebel Ali Port have container repair facilities, which can accommodate a large number of containers to provide more effective port services. In addition, Jebel Ali Port also has a super-large cold storage of 43,000 cubic meters. Dubai Port Authority has obtained ISO9002 certification in container and general cargo handling business.

One of the main supporting facilities of Jebel Ali Port is the adjacent Jebel Ali Free Trade Zone, which was established in 1985 with an investment of US$ 2.5 billion. Now it has become an ideal large-scale special zone integrating logistics, warehousing, import and export trade, production and processing. The Dubai government has given many preferential policies to enterprises entering the FTZ, including exempting import duties, allowing goods to enter and leave Hong Kong freely, allowing foreign investors to set up wholly-owned enterprises, and allowing profits to be remitted abroad freely. At present, more than 1 100 global multinational companies and well-known enterprises have settled in Jebel Ali Free Trade Zone. These enterprises have set up production and logistics centers in the free trade zone, which has promoted the growth of Dubai's import and export goods.

In fact, Dubai's functional orientation has gone far beyond the original single port, because it is not only a transit center for goods transported to the domestic market, but also plays an important role as a logistics base in surrounding areas. The surrounding areas here include not only the member countries of the Gulf Cooperation Organization (Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, United Arab Emirates, etc.). ), including the Indian subcontinent, former CIS countries and vast areas of South Africa, East Africa and North Africa. Dubai Port Authority has high efficiency in loading and unloading goods, has a variety of warehouse equipment to meet various needs, can independently carry out reliable road transportation, and provides various advanced cargo control systems and logistics management systems, all of which provide a guarantee for the rapid turnover of goods.

The long-term goal of Dubai Port Authority is to build Dubai into a global shipping hub similar to Hong Kong and Singapore in the Far East. To this end, in the next 10 year, Dubai will continue to carry out the necessary port infrastructure construction and open up a third artificial port. At the same time, Dubai will also increase the technical content of port operation, introduce shipping systems and technologies including data processing, cargo monitoring, information transmission, terminal management and other functions, and strive to integrate "cargo loading and unloading port" and "logistics information port".

Dubai Port Authority has been rated as "the best port in the Middle East" by Asia Freight News magazine for three consecutive years, and "the best container terminal operator" by the 1 1 AFIA (Asian Freight Industry Award). In a short period of more than 20 years, the cargo throughput of Dubai Port has continuously surpassed that of Shanghai, Bangkok and other established Asian ports, which makes people have to lament its rapid development. People have reason to believe that with the sustained economic development in the Middle East and the increasingly frequent exchanges with other parts of the world, Dubai Port will surely achieve new development in the future.
